Just pure left-NIMBYism So I am not expecting much upzoning or TOD effort from Metra anytime soon (unless it’s 100% affordable and therefore unsustainable)
At its heart, this is a story about sprawl and the lack of a public square in many cities and towns. Places with parks, plazas, and places people can access for free often have outdoor concerts, movie screenings, or just ways people can socialize and have fun without having to pay for it.

At least three passenger jets appear to have had rejected landings/go-rounds in ~30 minutes while that UFC light show was going a mile away. @aaronparnas.bsky.social previously reported a commercial pilot filed an FAA safety report about being “nearly blinded” by a test run of the lights.
This thread is a great demonstration of the antisocial behavior and attitudes stimulated by car dependence. It is a system of mobility and lifestyle of conflict with strangers and the threat of violence. Walking/cycling/transit are communal experiences that stimulate camaraderie and civility.

The answer: spending millions on consultants to do things like cost estimating or routine environmental work that can be done by Caltrans for less. CV rail might be a one-off for RCTC, but CA will build dozens of projects like it in the State Rail Plan. We need to build this capacity in-house.

This isn't just a casual observation. Fascism scholars have long made this point. It's why calling them "weird" was a more effective strategy than talking about the prices of eggs. Fascism is an aesthetic political movement - you need to make people feel embarassed and horrified by it.

Eby@travis-robert.bsky.social · 2y agoI refuse to shut up about this: NYC started charging $9 to bring a car into our most transit-rich zone, the haters & trolls predicted doom, but traffic evaporated instantly and here’s Times Square tonite (even after the holiday tourists have left). For a better future, build transit & price driving!
I believe that car dependence and suburbia are significant causes of American political decline. Day to day benign interactions with different people build trust. Seeing them do the same things as you and the emotions on their faces build empathy. Interactions in traffic are hostile, impersonal.
