Toronto still obsesses about "shadows" from buildings. We need much more shade along streets & in all public spaces. Bring back awnings along high streets!

The critical thing is that European cities care about people outside of cars. North American cities mostly don't. Shade matters for people walking, biking, rolling, and waiting for buses
El-Sayed, Lawrence and McKinney all won progressive campaigns in Michigan last night by talking about climate and clean energy like it was a kitchen-table issue — because skyrocketing energy bills and endless wildfire smoke matter to people.
This is also an underappreciated reason we live in a gerontocracy. No company is giving you leave to campaign and with term limits in many states, you best case have a job for around a decade. Meanwhile, old people are bored and have infinite time, plus a lot of money usually!

To use a real world example, in 2020 there was a push to cut the NYPDs $6 billion budget to fund education. $1 billion was cut (sort of), then restored by 2022. As of 2025, the NY Dept of Education budget has grown from $34 billion to $40 billion through the normal process.
I would also say, as someone who prefers proposals be serious, that those pie charts of discretionary funding for cities that show police as like half the budget are incredibly misleading, largely because schools (much larger expenditure) are separate fiscal entities

Therefore, cops get to eat half the municipal budget. I’d like it to be different, but it’s kind of a waste of all our times to talk about other budget priorities as if it was.
I know that sounds counterintuitive, but the continued growth of any idea, community, or product is premised on its ability to accommodate heterogeneous populations. Bluesky is, in fact, shrinking right now, everyday, because it attracts only a handful of very similar people.

Starting next week pools are gonna be closed on weekdays in Sac while temps are still in the 100s. One may think “Huh maybe we should raise the tickets above $3-5$ so we can keep the pools open” But user fees are inequitable. So in the spirit of ensuring equal access the pool will be inaccessible.

I'm starting to see many buildings in the neighborhood update landscaping to meet Berkeley's new fire safety regulations. This one has new planting a few feet away from the building, and plants in flowerpots.

there's a great example of this from the early 20th century. victorian builders in SF had to compete on build quality, amenities and architecture because it was so easy to build new homes. (there's a good book on the same process in NYC called "the decorated tenement," h/t @stephenjacobsmith.com)
