I don't disagree with Jonah's assessment, but I also have my own take on games, so here it is. Every game is either about not touching bad things, learning about something that's happened in the past, or determining someone's fate, or somewhere in between.

A triangle showing three extremities of game types. Don't Touch the Bad Things is at the top, and that's every Mario game. Bottom left is Find Out What Happened, and that's Her Story. Bottom right is Decide Someone's Fate, which is Reigns. In the very middle, with equal parts all three, is Bastion. Other games somewhere in between the points are Ape Out, the Exit 8, Portal, Cave Story, Paradise Killer, Lorelei & the Laser Eyes, Crow Country, The Flame in the Flood, The The Stanley Parable, To the Moon, 1000xRESIST, and Papers Please.

I strongly believe in the breadth and influence of independent art, to grant us oblique angles on the world and ourselves. But also every indie game is somewhere on this spectrum:

A triangular range chart labeled "Indie Game Vibe Check", where the three axes are "Enpoisoned", "Pumpy's Big Clumpy", and "Misty Cube". Each intersection features a game - Lunacid is the most Enpoisoned, Untitled Goose Game is the most Pumpy's Big Clumpy, and Manifold Garden is the most Misty Cube. Undertale is directly in the center, surrounded by Tunic (Pumpy), Void Stranger (Misty), and Star of Providence (Poison)

complicated feelings on this because the industry (tbh all industry) is in the Worst Place and finding work and/or money can feel impossible but even inside that: if someone is telling you to get out of games because there's "no future" here as anything beyond a dark joke, i'd raise an eyebrow

Jolted awake from a disorienting nightmare, struggled to fall asleep again, only to dream that I uncovered a lost Beastie Boys demo where they considered breaking their "no marketing" rule in 2002 so they could make a collab song for King's Field IV Not exactly Kublai Khan, is it

A lyrics site showing a strange King's-Field-themed rewrite of The Beastie Boys' song "Intergalactic".
