As much as this fool deserves to be pilloried for his absolutely absurd statement, and it says something about Reform’s idiocy, why is this the top story on the Guardian site? They aren’t in a position to create policy, and probably never will be, so why are we treating anything they say seriously?

so the government can send us an emergency alert about the national risk of wildfires, but can’t actually address why it is that we’ve become a country at risk of wildfires, something formerly associated with arid climates?
This is brilliant. I read it, expecting American exceptionalism to claim all sorts of global phenomena, but they nailed it. The only thing missing is the most American thing of all: a gun. (Gift article)

Half the planet is having a massive fight about how to correctly interpret an Ancient Greek poem but go ahead, close some more humanities departments.
It’s a dark, miserable day here, I have a cold, and my thesis is stressing me out. But this has raised my spirits immeasurably.
ok reasonable
If I were a person in the past writing a document that may be looked at by historians one day I would simply have legible handwriting
The ENGFRA game healed something. Two teams Playing phenomenally. Records broken. Golden boot challenge laid. And our boys were incredible. Saka, Rice, Spence, Henderson, all of them. Proud of 🏴🏴🏴, and glad France gave us such a great game.
I love the World Cup because it lets you see the unique cultures of nations expressed through football, like Germany's ruthless efficiency, Brazil's beautiful dance, Spain's style and flair, France's total collapse in the face of slight adversity, and Italy's rich ancient history.
The social media age carries additional emotional risk during major sporting events: watching all the highlights, memes, and commentary during England’s great run means that all my timelines nothing but painful reminders of their big loss. Some effort will have to go into re-curating my feeds.
Why did big Dan Burn simply not eat Messi, while there was still time
I respect France's commitment to not working on a holiday.
Think I’d be great at soccer. I regularly go 90 mins without accomplishing one goal

pretty concerned that the Mexico fans blasting music at the England players' hotel all night might throw them off their normal game and they actually start playing well for a change
If Cambridge is clever enough, they go fully analog from now. Paper books and humans doing things.
Big day today. Turned down for my first academic job (a rite of passage!) But, locally famous for being anti-fascist.
Happy to report that the anti-fascism protestors outnumber the Robinson supporters about 100-1. And lots of entertainment watching the toffs trying to get in to the Oxford Union.
A legendary historian who has inspired so many, and will continue to do so. I’m very glad to have met him, and to have heard him speak about discovering Menocchio in the archives. RIP.

And this is why people hate the Oxford Union. Ashamed of the association doesn't even begin to cover it. I'll be out there protesting with the other anti-racists. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

It is an outrage that residents will end up footing the bill and associated disruption that comes from inviting a man who has a well documented history of racism, violence and deception. There is no value to free speech in platforminng racist conspiracy theorists www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I’m middle class, left wing, and my lived experience has taught me that I’ve been afforded more human rights on account of features I was born with and can’t control (skin colour, location of birth, cisgender, etc) than other people, and that makes me fucking furious because that’s unjust

Feminism is a project that holds that men and women are similar in most ways and should therefore be treated equally in most cases. TERFism is a project that holds that men and women are fundamentally and irrevocably different any must always be treated differently.
Prof. Lyndal Roper deserves this honour so much. Nobody is more inspiring, enthusiastic, and encouraging, and she is such a brilliant scholar. I'm honoured and very glad to have had the opportunity to pay tribute to her (even under an alias?!). Congratulations Lyndal!
