Also interesting is that Paul Lazarsfeld, who distinguished latent from manifest variables in his psychometric models branched from not one but TWO usages of the term latent. First is Merton's latent and manifest content in society, second "latent root", which is another older name for EIGENVALUES.

Tracing the usage of the term "latent" in science is frickin WILD, dude. It looks like it all goes back to (arguably) the start of the scientific method, Bacon's 1620 Novum Organum, in which he discussed the processus latens.

Doing research into primary documents from the 17th through 19th centuries is rad.
