I think we can agree that AI detectors are out. But universities are ignoring the fact that faculty cannot really out-design assessments to meet the challenges of this moment. We need sustained institutional support to be the best teachers we can be, and we aren't getting it.

I just saw a case where the lawyer did the research & wrote the brief. No hallucinations. He put it in chat gpt to polish it. Chat gpt changed the citations to include hallucinations & changed the language to make unsupportable claims. AI is too dangerous to use on critical docs.

I'm just gonna say: it somewhat baffles me that people who are understandably skeptical of opaque LLMs as legitimate sources of information will suddenly go full on "the computer KNOWS" when they are using opaque tools to "detect" AI. The computer does not know.

OCR output *ALWAYS* needs to be aggressively proofread, even with standard contemporary English orthography. I've relied on it because it was less trouble than typing up piles of documents by hand, but have never trusted it. It's output has also gotten noticeably worse since "AI" was added.
"History involves sorting and organizing hundreds of thousands of facts" I remain astounded by how loud and wrong people are about what history actually is.
Maybe I'm ok being left behind and don't want to go where the world is going.
