In his 2004 book, The Anatomy of Fascism, historian Robert Paxton identified the passions that had animated fascistic political cultures over the previous 80 years. These may sound familiar.

eelings t
hem "mobilizing passions":
• a sense of overwhelming crisis beyond the reach of any traditional solutions;
• the primacy of the group, toward which one has duties superior to every right, whether individual or universal, and the subordination of the individual to it;
• the belief that one's group is a victim, a sentiment that justifies any action, without legal or moral limits, against its enemies, both internal and external;
• dread of the group's decline under the corrosive effects of individualistic liberalism, class conflict, and alien influences;
• the need for closer integration of a purer community, by consent if possible, or by exclusionary violence if necessary;
• the need for authority by natural chiefs (always male), culminating in a national chieftain who alone is capable of incarnating the group's historical destiny;
• the superiority of the leader's instincts over abstract and universal
reason;
• the beauty of violence and the efficacy of will, when they are devoted to the group's success;

This week someone targeted my family for harm with a false report. We’re physically OK, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t harmed. I am beyond furious. Whatever your politics, this is awful, wrong, and can never become normal.

Netanyahu has been raising the specter of an Iranian nuclear weapon since at least 1995 and now is using that as an excuse to start a war. Almost all Iranians want freedom from the Islamic Republic of Iran. Despite what you might hear, tho, my people’s liberation will not come from foreign bombs.

Everyone complaining abou Dems not fighting hard enough need to give folks like Brad Lander, Alex Padilla, and Chris Van Hollen their flowers when they risk their personal safety to fight fascism. You need carrots to go with your sticks.

It would be so great if Democratic Party elected officials would start acting as if they’re living under a government that will lawlessly kill or arrest them for the crime of political opposition.
