For the 4th year in a row, my all-sky camera has been taking an image of the sky above the Netherlands every 15 seconds. Combining these images reveal the length of the night changing throughout the year, the passage of clouds and the motion of the Moon and the Sun through the sky. #astrophotography

This image shows the hourglass shape of the nights shortening and
lengthening from winter to summer and from summer to winter, passing
clouds, the Moon passing through the night sky every month (diagonal
bands) and the Sun climbing higher in the sky during summer.

Writing bash scripts in ${CURRENT_YEAR} Still can't bring myself to `rm` my tempfiles You never know when a cosmic ray will strike the memory containing your $TMPDIR and turn your `rm -rf ${TMPDIR}/var` into `rm -rf /var` The paranoia is real! I'll leave cleaning up /tmp to a system service!

Wow, people using BlueSky's Open Network in their own apps to do add discussion threads to.. anything! This is the sort of global database that Blockchain promised to be, without all the dodgy crypto and high energy use of existing Blockchains.

i'm obsessed with the speed of devs building here @joneslloyd.bsky.social built a chrome extension that allows you to use bluesky replies as the comments section for *any URL* with an open network, bluesky can be the comments section of the entire internet

It's #SC24 week, so what better time for the Bristol Centre for Supercomputing (BriCS) to assemble the 5MW data centre for Isambard-AI. Of course we have typical UK winter weather to contend with, i.e. wind, rain, and today even snow. Fantastic support from HPE and Contour makes this possible #HPC

Thank you for all for blowing up my phone with New Follower notifications! I plan to start sharing lessons learned in HPC, Cloud Native, Linux, but also considerably less sexy stuff such as documentation & project management approaches. There, I can't take it back now!

It seems like #SC24 is a popular time to not only announce new supercomputers, but decommission them. In addition to Summit's farewell party this week (after six years of service!), Isambard-2 is being retired after 6 years as well: gw4.ac.uk/news/gw4-isa...

GW4 Isambard 2, one of the world’s first Arm-based supercomputers to go into production use, has officially powered down for the final time, after six years of service.

I've developed a pleasingly simple interactive Bash script template over the years, I need to do a write-up explaining it Bash has such a long legacy some sysadmins will account for issues that have been long solved, or conversely use syntax that hasn't been necessary in well over a decade.

When you've invested too many hours in a platform before you realise it uses JQuery... Worse that, the JQuery is introducing a 2 second rendering delay... and it's woven into everything so I'd have to rewrite ... Ugh Javascript.. to fix it! My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined

BlueSky lists has really helped turbo charge my feed back to what I used to enjoy on that old website, "Twitter"? Was it? It was like MySpace but less poorly compressed wav files.. and no custom background images... Anyway, I'm glad to see my tech people tweeting again!

Wow, so all it took for people to try a new social media platform was realising they were accidentally fueling a crypto-fascist movement, oopsies! Welcome to the Internet!

Red Dwarf - Timeslides. Lister tells Lister from the past: "Stop saying everything's crypto-fascist! You make me sound like I was a complete git!"

Hello 🦋 Happy to see many familiar faces around. Wasn't easy to find all of you (I probably missed many), so I created a starter pack to make it easier to (re)connect and nerd out about distributed systems, programming languages, and container stuff. Let me know who I missed! go.bsky.app/U1hZhum
