Unrelatedly, I was listening to a recent Yes Indie’d episode where @newmadras.bsky.social discussed Defy the Gods with designer @hecticelectron.bsky.social If you pitched that game as “look! A TTRPG inspired by gods & myths! queerness!” you could list an entire LINEAGE of games across decades.
These were BIG influences on Defy the Gods: @lavietidhar.bsky.social—Black Gods Kiss, @wildeeps.bsky.social—Sorcerer of the Wildeeps, & @nkjemisin.bsky.social—the Stillness but also an amazing lecture she gave about world-building. Can't believe it's taken me this long to follow them here
What would it mean to “complete” a tabletop RPG, like completing a video game? As with many story games, Defy the Gods has an end point. After a wild ride full of defying the gods, once your characters have given in to monstrous, godlike power & ascended to become World Forces … you’ve done it.
I…so many thoughts…this is why I love my comic book shop, my friendly local game store, graphic novels, and especially tabletop RPGs. The experience is forever analog. You get something you can hold in your hands. With games, you get an experience to share with people who’re in the room with you

Dad once told me to check under the car seat and Pokemon Red was there in a bag. Ownership isn't the only thing we lose with physical media
