I was in the grocery store yesterday, buying South African lemons, because I refuse to buy American produce. I vividly remember the days when Canadians boycotted South African fruit and wine, to protest apartheid. Now, the world’s turned upside down.

Apple's Macintosh brand (now just Mac) is named after the McIntosh apple. It's one of the USA's most iconic brands. The McIntosh apple is Canada's national apple. It's Canada's national apple because it originated here. Was it Trump who said the USA doesn't need anything from Canada?
My hope for every American who defaults to “Mind your own business, Canadian” is that they one day come to understand that all we’ve ever, ever wanted is to be able to do that.

Well, the bug excitement just doesn't end today. I mowed the lawn this evening, and just I was heading back inside, I spotted something crawling on my milkweed. It was a monarch caterpillar! I was sort of hoping, but not expecting, that growing milkweed would play host to a monarch caterpillar.

I'm putting people who say things like "an LLM has anxiety because it produces text like someone who does" and people who say things like "an LLM is a compiler because I never look at the code it produces" in the same bin.

I was watching a TV series from 2010 last night, and it was made very clear that the Nazis were villains. Only about 5 years later, that consensus began to unravel.

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.
This thing has come back many times throughout the day. Really seems to prefer that I don't get close. Every time I try to get a closer look, it flies off.

Now and then I see some counterarguments to claims that GenAI is harmful to the environment. That would be great, if turns out to be true, because it would mean we don't need to compromise on environmental regulations to accommodate people/orgs that want to build AI data centres.
People in my feeds are talking about COVID lockdowns today for some reason, and it occurs to me that approach that many governments took to COVID was conservative, in the apolitical sense of the word, yet it was the conservatives, in the political sense of the word, who hated them the most.

Fire Watch gets out of the plane, hugs my brother. Walks into the terminal, books a ticket home. He’s done. There’s a lot going on right now. My brother is trying to get out of Spokane, along with a half million residents.
The Fire Watch guy, who has none of this training and has been deluged in over the top emergencies for who knows how long but definitely the past few days, sees the engine stop and thinks he’s gonna fucking die on this one. They land fine ofc.
My brother flies air attack for wildfire: he drives the plane as the Fire Watch guy in the right seat calls in aerial assets (water bombers, helos etc). Yesterday he was flying one of the many other fires in Eastern Washington (probably the Modrite Complex on the Columbia).
