BREAKING: Obsidian Entertainment is making a big pivot as part of the Xbox restructuring. It has laid off a quarter of its staff, canceled a planned sequel to Avowed, and is now beginning work on a new Fallout game, according to people familiar with the plans www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Xbox wants to have one BILLION active daily players. This is Steam's current daily players according to SteamDB. Xbox wants to have over 20x the daily active users as Steam, which I guess they're expecting to just materialize out of the ether after massive layoffs. This is completely delusional.

Big cuts, but Xbox has managed to avoid closing any studios today. Double Fine and Compulsion go indie. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs will have new owners. Arkane Lyon process starts today. CEO Asha Sharma wants Xbox to reach 1bn players a day (it currently hits 1bn a year).

Look at the history of any big game development icon and you'll see a string of small roles in small projects, and often failed projects too, but it was the luxury to learn from those roles that made them who they are. Once they retire, they'll leave no successors because they keep getting fired.

Xbox is preparing to lay off around 3,200 individuals, part ways with Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, and possibly Arkane Lyon in what CEO Asha Sharma is calling "the most significant res... https://kotaku.com/xbox-layoff-3200-most-significant-restructure-history-2000712836

I may not like the heat, but one thing I love about summer is that all the cool bugs come out. Found this really big beetle in the backyard. He was a big softie and hung out with me for like 10 minutes. Spoilered for people who don't like bugs.

If I don't have the option to physically own the games that I buy, I genuinely have no reason to buy your console. I put up with digital games on PC because my PC has other uses. If you reserve the right to turn the machine I bought that ONLY plays games into a useless brick, I'm not buying it.

Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles. "Physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028." https://ow.ly/3NSn50ZjcKP

I don’t want this point to be lost in the discourse. Going digital-only means inequity for people who cannot afford internet or constantly purchasing new games. Libraries provide opportunities for people to experience games they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford, and that will be lost.

My child loves going to the library and checking out a new video game every week. Going digital only eliminates libraries as a way people can access games.
