DARAMSUQ — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres concluded a two-day visit to Syria, during which he voiced strong support for the country's transitional phase while urging the international community to back political commitments with sustained economic and humanitarian assistance. During the visit, Guterres said the Syrian people "have shown exceptional resilience through years of suffering" and "should not bear the burden of recovery alone," calling on the international community to translate political support into economic engagement and long-term practical assistance.

Shamiran Istifan at the Aargauer Kunsthaus: Through the Window of Memory and Modernity
AARAU, Switzerland — When visitors enter Shamiran Istifan's exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus, they encounter familiar things. Swiss mailboxes, paving stones, imitation leather, cosmetics. Yet nothing remains ordinary for long. Through sculpture, installation, video, and textiles, these everyday objects become carriers of memory, identity, and power, revealing the unseen worlds that coexist beneath the surface of contemporary Switzerland. The exhibition marks a significant moment in the career of the 39-year-old artist.

He was emeritus professor of Afro-Asiatic linguistics at Leiden, and one the founding figures of Amazigh studies in Leiden. A short thread on what I'll remember him for.
