How infuriating to hear the chairman(?) of Asda on the Today programme implying that land use for solar farms might significantly hurt UK food production. It's nonsense. Golf courses use more than solar ever will & beef/lamb production is huge yet provides a tiny fraction of our protein & calories.

Plot showing land use in the UK: predominantly beef and lamb pastures

Nice reminder that because a study is published in a journal does not mean it’s a good study or that its stated conclusions are reasonable! When people say they are “doing their own research,” even if reading primary literature, missing the context & subtleties can lead to wildly wrong conclusions.

The shit you can get away with in nutrition research is egregious. Even 24 hour food recall diaries are notoriously unreliable, but asking people what they ate in *the past year* is a joke. You can't track a 10% drop in UPF consumption if your input data is off by 80%!

I don't recall any previous transformative technologies that had to be sold to the public so hard. No one in 1999 was going, "Guys. Cell phone? It's coming, whether we like it or not. I think it's important, FOR WOMEN ESPECIALLY, to learn about cell phone. So that we're not left behind!!"

Certainly not the most important issue with the current situation in the Middle East, but there is a new Iran shaped hole in our surface weather observation network. In this example, measurements of surface pressure fed into operational weather forecasts: 9th Feb (left) and 9th Mar (right)
