“I thought–” Wren’s words sliced sharply through the air and then seemed to stick in her throat. “I thought you were dead. That it was my fault.”
A slender hand rose and hovered over Spencer’s chest, not quite touching. Every inch of Wren was taut, like a bow string ready to snap. The strange light in her eyes was fear, he realized. Fear for him, not of him. And anger, too, judging by the tick of her jaw. He slid his fingers over Wren’s trembling hand and pressed it gently down, letting her feel the rise and fall of his breath and the steady rhythm thudding beneath it.

On the weekend I went with my girlfriend (!! still feels so nice to say those two words, my girlfriend !!) to an exhibition called The Thread of Hīnātore. I stumbled in on her recommendation alone, knowing it had something to do with science as well as art, but not really knowing much more about it. What a treat, then, to get there and discover it was an exhibition of bioluminescent life forms bringing five works of art to life with their inherent natural glow.

#AwesomeCharacters Technically, Kallista and Geni meeting in chapter two of A Prayer for the Pirate Queen IS a reunion. They met briefly at a naval dinner, back when Kallista was in the navy and Geni was married to another officer. They weren't in the right place to properly notice each other yet.

Wren slipped up to the edge of the door, pressing her back against the slab of stone and angling her body to present as small a target as possible.

Forget sleeping for a week. I will sleep for a month when this is over, she promised herself. I will crawl into Spencer’s bed and they’ll need a crowbar to pry me out of it.

The tableau below was grim, lit by thin shafts of broken moonlight filtering through breaks in the storm clouds and the occasional harsh flare of lightning that stuttered across the sky. The orderly camp Wren had been marched through was shredded to ribbons. Tattered tents flapped in the whipping wind as skeletal Fain warriors milled around the base of the pyramid, ripping down tarps and shoving over support poles.

“What?” He wrinkled his nose. “Why do I have to roll again?”
“Because you’re cheating!”
“I am not!”
“You are too!”
“You’re just upset because you’re losing.”
“I’m losing because you’re cheating!”
He tried to reach around her with his other hand in attempt to pick up his pawn and move it. But, still clutching his first hand, she twisted her elbows to block him. The battle soon escalated into an awkward kind of arm-wrestling match, in which Kena continuously tried to find a way around her elbows to reach his pawn, while Mireia kept contorting her arms in whatever absurd way was necessary to stop him, still keeping a tight grip on his other hand. Both of them were barely holding back laughter as the wrestling match grew more and more ridiculous. And Mireia’s eyes blazed at him with ferocious determination, which only made it harder for him not to laugh.
“Mireia! You’re going to knock over the game.”
“At least then you won’t win!”
“Will you just—?” He finally grew so exasperated that he grabbed her by the elbow, attempting to pry his hand free.
“No!” She resisted him as hard as she could. And, just as he’d predicted, after a few moments of struggling, their hands jerked downward and hit the game board, scattering pieces across the bed.
“There, now look what you’ve done!” Kena said.
“That was your fault.”
“How was that my fault?”

Geni breathed out, then looked up at Melissa. The lieutenant was, of course, opening the floor to her, as much as she didn't want it. "He asked the sender to pry into my mind to find out what it would cost for me to betray you." Her voice sounded flat to her, despite the hollowness in her chest which should have made all sound echo in desolation. She look up at Kallista, expecting anger, but found only patience.

"And the answer he found?"

"My children, of course."

It all seemed to happen so slowly, Spencer felt as though he was hanging above the floor for an eternity, staring up at the swirls of clouds and stars painted on the slight dome of the ceiling, before the ground rushed up to meet him. He hit with a hard smack that knocked the wind out of his lungs and left him gulping like a fish flipped onto the dock.

“So much for looking, not touching.” Bruce groaned from the ground beside him. Evidently the lash of power had traveled across the entire room. “What the hell was that?”

“I don’t know,” Spencer wheezed once he could speak again. “I hope I didn’t offend Her somehow.”

“We put flowers on the Lady’s altar at home all the time.” Bruce grunted as sat up and clutched his aching head. “Surely that wouldn’t piss Her off?”

“Well, I wouldn’t think so, but gods and their mysterious ways.” Spencer shrugged. The floor was cold and hard against his back but he wasn’t quite ready to try sitting up yet.

“Oh. Huh.” Bruce muttered cryptically. “Spence… I don’t think you made Her mad. I think maybe you did the opposite.”

“What does that mean?” He groused as he scrabbled upright. Bruce grabbed his arm and helped lever him into a sitting position, then pointed towards the offering shelf. Spencer’s orchid had vanished and a small opening had appeared in the wall behind the bronze bracket. The candlelight glinted against something pale in the dark recess.

Thief of Death is my weird little baby that doesn't fit neatly into any box. BUT I think it has The Mummy's humor and adventure vibes mixed with a cozy found family and a compassionate, handsome guy who talks to the dead like Surreal Estate. #SummerOfStories #Wrencer #WritingPrompt

Getting close to the end of this RETURN TO BLUDEYE BEACH draft; I know I've shared pieces of this scene before, but it's definitely hitting me particularly hard this go-through.

“You can do whatever it is you feel like you need to do to prove yourself as a person,” Will said. “You can also do what you need to be happy. Your purpose is to figure out how to do both of those things at the same time.”
“Easier said than done.”
“Maybe. But it’s a lot harder when you can’t admit what you want,” Will pointed out.
