As the Spokane community continues to face the devastating impacts of local wildfires, you can help your neighbors. We will continue to update this thread with more opportunities to help!
My parents and half my family have evacuated, more waiting to hear. Today I’ve gotten offers of shelter from southwest of Spokane to Sandpoint, and that’s just the friends who have been texting. This is a standup fucking community when it wants to be. We show up for our people.
Please do not drive into the Old Trails Fire evacuation zone. For those in the evacuation zone, please head eastbound. For all evacuation information, visit bit.ly/SRECOfficial...
Somehow we haven't been hit with any evac orders yet, but are ready to bolt when needed. This photo is from the morning when the Old Trails fire was roughly 1/10 the size it is now I hope everyone in Spokane is staying safe.
Russia is gonna declare victory, withdraw it's forces to the land they've captured and then sit on it hoping that Ukraine will exhaust themselves trying to reclaim it
Russia is at a very important point regarding the conclusion of the special military operation, Dmitry Medvedev stated.
How soon before Platner is on the right-wing grifter circuit?
But here's the important part: Just because ACA 22 got the more dangerous measure off the ballot *doesn't* mean ACA 22 should pass on the ballot. You should vote No on ACA 22.
🚨This desperately needs national attention: 3 people were just convicted of FEDERAL CONSPIRACY for protesting ICE last June. It's pretty similar to the #Broadview6 case with @katmabu.bsky.social that was recently dismissed.
The attorneys for the defense have said they plan to appeal the verdict, but before that they will ask the judge to overturn it in a Rule 29 hearing in five weeks.
So much "journalism" treats everything like a thought experiment. Presuppose the merits and follow the logic in an agnostic way. Zero critical analysis about why something like this is happening or what it means.
The “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” ends this week. The demise of the long-running franchise made our critic Wesley Morris think of another late-night show: “Saturday Night Live.” Maybe, after 51 years, “SNL” should end, too. nyti.ms/42RZABJ
Eastern Washington University is considering cutting a number of degree programs from its curriculum. Among them: the Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies (GWSS) degree, a storied program that advocates say should not be cut.
Students battle EWU to keep gender studies
In the years after its rebranding as a ‘polytechnic,’ EWU may slash academic programs, including its gender studies, ESL, data science and other degrees. Advocates are rallying against the cuts.

Our region has at least 400 miles of paved and dirt trails, but each is seen as an individual park rather than part of a cohesive system. Spokane could see huge economic benefits if we invested in connecting these into a trail network like other communities have.
Why the greater Spokane area needs a branded regional trail network

I'm seeing a lot of data center discourse on here. They're critical pieces of infrastructure to the entire global economy, so they aren't just going to go away.
I definitely don't know the ins and outs of city planning, but designs like these feels like it's trying to avoid a "strip mall" aesthetic
Planners only want one thing and it's disgusting.
Dawkins has been one of those intellectuals that has pooh-poohed philosophy as a serious discipline because it's not science™️. Boy could he benefit from reading up on basically every major philosophy of science and mind that's been produced the last 120 years.
In totally unsurprising news, Richard Dawkins is developing AI psychosis. Paywall bypass: archive.is/6RdK9
In 2008 I worked for Obama's campaign in Indian River County Florida. For folks unfamiliar with the area, in 2004, indian river donated the second most money to George W Bush per capita of any county in the US. Just one county S, the Republicans elected David Duke's son as their county chair.
National kWh is up 9% compared to last February. Tripling the core CPI numbers is not sustainable, to say the least. It's worth keeping in mind for much of the 2010s the year-over-year increases were pretty flat (1-2%). In the past 6 years, it's increased 40% total. www.eia.gov/electricity/...

I don't even know where to start with this. No, I guess. Don't build new fossil fuel plants. Build solar and batteries and wind and batteries and, for good measure, more batteries.
High utility bills, blackouts more likely unless WA takes this step | Editorial
Another sobering study shows the limits to deep decarbonization. Legislators should heed those warnings to avoid higher utility bills and blackouts.

Seattle Times wants the state to rely more heavily on "natural" gas and hope for nuclear fusion instead of decarbonizing, which is yet anohter example of why editorial boards—made up of non-experts who often get facts wrong about stories in their own newspapers—should go the way of the dodo.

Trump channeling his inner Caesar with this whole blockade the blockade idea
A stat that surprised me, but perhaps shouldn't have, when I was reading YIMBY stuff is that homelessness is correlated with housing prices. I guess this is surprising because you tend to assume it can't be as simple as price. And price isn't the only thing, but it turns out to matter.

Donald Trump needs to go — the 25th Amendment needs to be invoked.
Gov. Pritzker wants 25th Amendment invoked to remove President Trump from office over Iran threats
Gov. JB Pritzker joined more than 50 House Democrats — and an unlikely alliance of conservatives calling for the president's removal, including former U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, former MAGA ally and radio host Alex Jones and conservative commentator Candace Owens.

Michael Baumgartner is a bad person who blindly rubber stamps Trump's agenda and should not be in Congress.
Victoria Derbyshire, "Does President Trump posting that a whole civilisation will die tonight, sound like genocide to you?" Republican Congressman Michael Baumgartner, "Oh no, not at all"
Basically, Israel oversold the "benefits" of the strikes and handwaved the risks and Trump was sold. Almost everyone else around him was ambivalent or for it (except for Vance). www.nytimes.com/2026/04/07/u...
