Taxing the rich is the only capitalist safeguard against tyranny. Capitalism protected us from tyranny and despotism when we taxed the rich at 50-90%. They built libraries, etc. When the rich have no incentive not to hoard resources, capitalism is as susceptible to tyranny as any other system

Excellent thread re socially hostile design
"design" is interesting here. They have designers working on parts at a time, UX, hardware, software, aesthetics, but these groups are not united by an overarching (marketable) purpose, they are detached from the bigger picture and designing for their domain purposes 1/x
Wow: In the early vote, it's a blow-out *so far*. Rodney Sadler, the progessive pastor and activist, leads state Representative Carla Cunningham 75% to 18%. (Stay tuned as we see how the Election Day vote compares, but that's an ominous start for the incumbent.) Context:
1️⃣ Last summer, a Democratic lawmaker in North Carolina gave the GOP *the* decisive vote to pass a pro-ICE law. Now, she faces a primary from a local progressive pastor who has been part of the Moral Monday movement. (A few other Dems who helped the GOP also face challengers.)
I'm going to do a thread of all the references and context behind Bad Bunny's performance and what it means for Puerto Ricans to see this on the biggest stage. The opening title screen is a street mural in Puerto Rico that comes to life with footballs as coconuts. Follow along!

What we are seeing in Minnesota is what authoritarianism looks like in real time. Racism, dehumanization, and state-sanctioned violence are tearing at the foundation of this country.
I’m trying to teach my cats de-escalation. Primarily by sweetly injecting my face between two felines facing off with ears back, saying, “de-escalate!” It disrupts the attack vibe enough much of the time!

My friend Joe asks for international boycott: “The U.S. is supposed to be my country, right or wrong. It's so wrong right now that I can hardly stand it.”
🧵 Thread: I know the USA has a reputation for, um, impolity: our citizens are sometimes considered rude or boorish abroad; our federal government is out of control. I like seeing No Kings protests internationally, but I think Canada & Mexico would be lining the borders w/ hate signs. I'm tired…

I want to do a little breakdown of this investigation I published today for @prismreports.org about gender-based violence in the H-2A agricultural visa program.
She managed to get a farmworker visa. Once in the U.S., she endured abuse.
A Prism investigation reveals that women are routinely shut out of the H-2A program. Those who get in report doing non-agricultural labor and facing sexual violence and trafficking
