A question for my US historian friends: What relatively short books are you assigning in your modern US classes now? They can be primary sources like Baldwin's The Fire Next Time or fiction like O'Brien's The Things They Carried. Im just curious as I am looking to revise my course. Please share!

No real surprises: Mood ranges from resignation to despair, capitulation from embittered erosion of standards to total, feelings of betrayal from deep to furious. 1/

Agree re libraries, and will add that this is a devastating report in general. $10,000 a year average?? Also, I would argue anecdotally that classroom sales, traditionally a strong market for academic books, are way down in part b/c students are broke and downloading pirated books for free.

Sobering. At Nevada's two R1 doctoral universities, @unevadareno.bsky.social and @unlv.edu, nominal average salaries for all faculty ranks actual declined by 0.7% from 2024-25 to 2025-26. After inflation, salaries are down by over 4%. Falling behind again.
AAUP@aaup.org · 2mo agoToday, the AAUP released the Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession, 2025–26. It is sobering. Full-time faculty salaries are down about 0.4% in real, inflation-adjusted terms. Average full-time faculty salaries remain 9.5% below fall 2019 & about 5.8% below fall 2008. 1/
