If we build enough clean power and grid capacity to accommodate winter peaks from electrification of space heat in colder climates (like most of Europe and North America), we'll have more than enough capacity for carbon-free air conditioning for all. If we win heat, we get AC pretty much for free.

Here’s what the air conditioning discourse illuminates: to deal with climate change we need to electrify & we need zero carbon electricity, we also need more electricity- like double or triple what we have. And we need more cooling & cooling equity. There will be folks fighting against all of that.

AC Discourse Attempt: In many heating dominant climates, AC energy usage is almost trivial vs. heat. Attached: last 4 years of heat pump energy usage for our fully electrified, 130 year old, insulation retrofitted Chicago home. (CC: @johnsmillie42.bsky.social who I believe has similar data) 1/n

Scottish soccer fans in town for the World Cup made a side-trip to Fenway on Sunday and brought actual magic with them. It was such a delight and honor to get to accompany their singing.

The IBM 604 Electronic Calculating Punch was introduced in 1948. Not quite a computer, it was a programmable calculator that became very popular due to its low price of $550/month, and over 5600 were produced. I have a vacuum tube module from this system, so I powered it up... 1/N

Black and white photo of the IBM 604 Electronic Calculating Punch behind a Type 521 Card Reader/Punch. The IBM 604 is about the size of two refrigerators. It's a dark gray box with art deco-ish chrome trim. The Card Reader/Punch is slightly smaller but the same style. It has a hopper on top for inserting a stack of punch cards.A thyratron tube module from the IBM 604 Electronic Calculating Punch.
The module consists of a vacuum tube in a U-shaped metal frame with pins at the bottom. The vacuum tube is a glass cylinder with a peak at the top and some metal inside. Some resistors and capacitors are mounted between the tube and the pins. The U-shaped frame functions as a handle so the module can be pulled out and replaced.

Continuing the theme from the last episode on the energy transition and the ethical balancing act we have before us, I spoke with @jmijin.bsky.social to zoom out to the bigger picture of what we should each be focusing on to ensure a just transition for all. Have a listen!

I have a few canned lines to explain where I live when I'm at a north side event and somebody, inevitably, doesn't know where my neighborhood is. But I've recently comprehended that for some of them, my explanation is their first realization that the south side is much larger than the north side.

Our canonical "long run" turnaround for @rprc.bsky.social is Baháʼí House of Worship. We start at Touhy (7200N) and Sheridan so not quite the northern-most extent. The out and back is a bit over 11 miles. (Soren's quoted thread is about the unappreciated-by-north-side-folk scale of the South Side.)

Some of the canned lines in question: - Go from the Loop to Hyde Park and then double that distance - Sox Park is at 35th, and my cross street is 113th - The Baháʼí House of Worship in Wilmette is the same distance from downtown as I am - I'm 25 blocks south of the southernmost Red Line station

Today, in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision in Callais, I'm fighting for voting rights. As my late colleague Elijah Cummings used to say, we are better than this.

A genuine question for the assembled Bluesky. What does it even mean to be a shareholder in such an enterprise? I've long wondered this about Facebook. Now we have another one of the worlds most powerful people orchestrating involuntary investment under a zero-accountability structure. Troubling...
