Climate scientist, focussed on Antarctic sea ice

As a climate science communicator I’m told that it’s important to finish on a message of hope. But honestly, what does it say about us as a society that a month long illegal war has been a greater motivator of decarbonisation than decades of environmental degradation and threat to our own wellbeing?

Emperor penguins, Antarctic fur seals now endangered due to climate change

The iconic emperor penguin and the Antarctic fur seal are edging closer to extinction, according to a projection by the world's largest environmental network.

It's going to be a difficult week for many of Australia's climate researchers. 🧪 I'll say more once the details of the proposed cuts are known but it's looking like Australia is going to heavily reduce our climate science capacity and capabilities. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03...

Scientists warn axing CSIRO jobs will harm climate change response

Scientists are calling on the Australian government to push back on a plan to scrap hundreds of jobs at the nation's science agency, as they await the release of further details this week.

Genuine question for any #arctic experts; does Lake Huron actually ice shelves? An ice shelf -typically 100s of meters thick and thousands of km in area - is the floating extension of a glacier or ice sheet. This sounds more like a chunk of lake ice that broke off. bbc.com/news/article...

Canadian officials rescue 23 people who floated away on ice sheet

Members of the group described harrowing moments, with more cracks forming as they looked for the thickest ice.

Antarctic ice sheet folk, I'm looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Antarctic Ice Sheet Reconstruction [readvertised] for a 3.5yr appointment in Tasmania. Very flexible start date! Join our new team, figuring out what is happening and what may happen in East Antarctica. 1/4 ❄️

I’m currently getting “friendly reminders” to complete my assessments of FT applicants. I was thinking of submitting them them 2 months late and just doing 67% of the assessment. Because who am I to argue with the ARC standard…?

Here’s @jsresearchpro.bsky.social reporting on ridiculous new ARC grant time-scales (e.g. 16 months for DPs). The ARC “did not respond to questions about the reasons for the length of the delays or on how the changes will affect researchers’ planning”. I reckon they haven’t thought that far ahead.

We have ****ed the climate. Dressing this up as temporary overshoot is indefensible. But this does not mean we are doomed, & it certainly doesn't mean there is no point in trying to turn off the fossil fuel spigot. It's time to get real with climate risks. www.technosphere.earth/derailment-w...

Derailment warning as world faces threats to its ability to act on climate change

We may have seriously underestimated the risks of climate change. This includes derailment risks. This does not mean we are doomed, and it certainly does not mean there is no point in trying to turn o...
