Sea surface temperatures are way above average in parts of the #Arctic as of last month, particularly in the Kara Sea Basin extending to around Svalbard and the Greenland Sea. This is also found in the Hudson Bay due to their very early sea ice melt-out. Data from @noaa.gov OISSTv2.1 🌊

It can be now said with certainty that the thermal spring started in Sodankylä, Lapland on March 12. That is the earliest onset of spring on record (since 1908). The date is 10 days earlier than the previous record (in 1920) and 37 days before the median date for 1991–2020 (April 18).
