One more country to the 40 °C club! Pinsk, Belarus reached 40.4 °C today, setting a new national heat record. The list of European countries that have never reached 40 °C is getting smaller: basically just the Nordic and Baltic countries, and Ireland. Maybe some microstates too.

Poland's weather service @imgwmeteo.bsky.social is predicting 41 °C for western Poland in Sunday. If verified, it would not only be Poland's new all-time heat record, but also mark the northeasternmost 40°C ever recorded in Europe (and potentially closest 40°C to Finland).

Tough night? A historic warm night in capital with overnight low of 22.6C at #London Heathrow, a record breaking warm night of any month. The former record was 22.3C in July 2016. Until this heatwave the June highest minimum was 20.8C (1976) this has been broken on 3 nights maybe 1 more to add.

France officially recorded its hottest day on record yesterday, with the nationwide average temperature exceeding 30°C for the first time ever. Uncharted territory.

Paris just had their hottest night on record. The temperature did not drop below 26.4 °C at the Montsouris weather station. With daytime highs rising into the 40 degrees yesterday and today in the city of millions, it is unfortunately a deadly heatwave for many.

In fact, we have a manuscript in preparation where we analysed over 7,000 years of ECMWF seasonal forecasts and found that 40 °C temperatures are nowadays regularly simulated for Norway, Sweden and Finland. The Nordic all-time heat record is 38.5 °C (Sweden in 1947) but for how long?

The European heatwave will move eastward in the coming days and the forecasts for the weekend are insane: close to 40 °C for the Baltic Sea coast. It's only a matter of time when the Nordic countries record their first 40 °C.

There is the risk that some events at London Climate Action Week will be cancelled this week because of an extraordinary heatwave. The @metoffice.gov.uk has just upgraded to red alert on Wedneday with London at 40°C. Previous June record was 35.6°C. This is an emergency.

ECMWF weekly mean temperature anomaly shows the highest category (>10°C above normal) over France this week. Typically, these colors appear only during winter warm spells, when temperature variability is the largest. Seeing them in mid-summer says a lot about the intensity of this heatwave.

Tuesday marks 50 years since the start of the infamous UK heatwave of 1976. The @metoffice.gov.uk app is predicting that day we'll smash the June temperature record of 35.6C set back then. Heading for a long run of 30C+ days. Climate writing its own script.

According to BBC weather, the forecast *10-day average maximum temperature" for Paris, France is 37 °C. And two days with 40 °C. ☀️🌡️ Probably not far away from the hottest 10-day period ever recorded in Paris.

And 40 °C in Paris on Wednesday!

The latest ECMWF det. run, a model not known for overdoing max temperature predictions, has 38°C in the London area on Tuesday. If not for 2022’s event the national record for any time of year would be under threat. As it is, the June record could be well exceeded.

The latest forecasts for the western European heatwave are concerning. The subtropical ridge stalls and the extremely warm airmass (T850 ~ 20 °C) will remain in place for at least a week or so. Next week is going to be brutal hot in Spain, France, the UK... ECMWF forecasts for Sun 21 and Sat 27:
