Started the day with a deep and wide conversation with Q, then had an unexpected insight into my feelings about my now-dementing faraway mother, then had transcendent craniosacral treatment. Now pondering whether running a couple of errands is in the correct spirit of Special Wednesday.

I am a bit sad about bsky being much smaller than Old Twitter because of reach. I basically want to say “hey if you know anyone in the Bay Area with a line on funding that isn’t tied up in LLMs (or even just really interesting people!) who I should chat to in the next uhhh few weeks let me know”

I once had a student who insisted she couldn’t be expected to know whether she was plagiarising unless I gave her access to Turnitin to see her “similarity scores” and I was like… if you don’t know when you are copying out of a book THAT is the problem right there (this was pre-ChatGPT)

This was extraordinary, although it’s taken me all day to read it. I’ve had to stop and go away and do other things. At times it left me disorientated and even distressed.

Research day off to an excellent start! Ebook loan has expired, no problem, will reborrow. Library has reconfigured its interface with ProQuest such that I have to download books via their app. All my notes & highlights on the first 150pp of the book (in Bluefire Reader) are now lost irrecoverably.
This is a phenomenal review/essay: a masterclass in Homeric poetry and history, exquisitely snarky, smart and cool. I can’t work out whether my favourite line is “Unlike some of Nolan’s other films, The Odyssey is not boring” or “There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible”.
