I finished Elizabeth Strout's latest book, THE THINGS WE NEVER SAY. As a huge fan of her work, I am sad to report this one fell short for me. Her protagonist, Artie Dam, is a high school teacher, so as somebody who has spent a lot of time in these settings across the US, I was all in. #BookSky

Small but good things spotted in the world: This morning, there was a line outside of Ann Patchett's Nashville bookshop right before opening. I was there to get Elizabeth Strout's latest, but they had sold out yesterday after President Obama published his summer reading list.

i appreciate this thread deconstructing the labor fantasy underlying the AI hype. it has made total sense to me that the labor fantasy has had a particular grip on US capitalists. it shares logics of slavery. no pesky human needs or moral quandaries to consider as we extract, produce, accumulate

But the biggest difference between a machine and a person is *moral consideration*. A person deserves and demands moral consideration: for their wellbeing, their feelings, even their bladders. A machine gets none of this: you can curse it, kick it, snap out orders without please or thank you. 12/

If you are submitting research and/or serving as an ad hoc reviewer these days, I recommend reading Horn and Kleiman's latest editorial in the "Journal for Research in Mathematics Education" about thoughtful and ethical engagement with AI.

My colleague Jennifer Kleiman and I wrote this editorial coming out of those discussions. We do not want to be reactive, but we also want to advise authors and reviewers on our best understanding of how to be ethical in AI use. tl;dr Humans are in charge, and should make their agency apparent.

As a journal editor, I have been confronted with an influx of AI produced text and, sadly, reviews. At one point, I felt frustrated enough to convene other journal editors in my field to talk about how we can navigate this time.
