Have you got a photo or image that really illustrates the #WarOnWalking, at any scale and in any context? Send it to us and we might turn it into another poster in this series. Thanks! #UrbanTruth

Sometimes the WAR ON WALKING results in no sidewalks at all. Sometimes they put “something” in — but does that really make things walkable for anyone except those without any other choices? The #WARonWALKING takes many forms, but it’s always about making things comfortable for vehicles, not people.

Image of a wide concrete overpass with a huge truck travelling dangerously close to a thin, uncomfortable looking concrete “sidewalk.” The text says “Don’t buy the lie that there’s a war on cars. They’ve been waging a war on walking for a century.” Tagline at the bottom says the Urban Truth Collective. #UrbanTruth #WarOnCars

It’s really interesting to me that every philosopher I recognised in this piece is male. Not that female philosophers are immune to professional risks but it recalls to mind Lord of the Flies as a hypothesis not on children’s behaviour, but specifically of privileged male behaviour.

Most philosophers prefer to keep madness at a safe distance. But to Wouter Kusters, the relationship is uncomfortably close: "Theoretical reflections have their practical counterpart in the breakdown of the mad."

However long it’s been, I can still feel humbled in my trauma healing journey by the casual reflexive kindnesses of people who grew up fully loved & supported. Like the phrase “let’s find out together” 😭 straight to the soul, that one.

Saw this heavily pregnant possum stroll out in daylight, heedless of the very curious pedestrians admiring her, going for what I guess is the possum equivalent of a midnight snack. Soothing some cravings? I got as close as I thought would be polite for the photo.

Photo of a brushtail possum in daylight, sitting on a cracked old concrete footpath next to a bush with flowers and a leaf-littered storm grate, grabbing one of the flowers in its hands for a snack.

The thing about "literacy as gatekeeping" is that literacy is a learned thing, not a taught thing. IME, any given communicator is *aching* for you to engage with their text, and will happily give you the tools if they can, but the limiting factor is you, yourself.

Believe Women is an epistemological stance. It doesn't mean you assume that every single woman is telling the truth and women never lie. It means you understand that in the system that we exist in, there's much more risk and pain for women coming forward about abuse than there is anything to gain.

I like this. Though when feedback channels are through forms rather than in-person, a limitation of the format is the inability to ask questions to guide feedback. An interesting tension since I’ve seen forms create that interpersonal barrier specially to protect from unempathetic feedback.

I heard today from someone that she encountered this piece of mine in a class! I had hoped it would circulate around, but I don't think I'd heard actual confirmation until now. somethingaboutmaps.wordpress.com/2021/02/02/c...

An image of a two-column text layout containing a series of statements on critique. For those with screen readers, the actual text of the statements can be read by following the link in the post.

So very about this, yes Reminds me of the “cinema sins” problem in fandom too, if critique is not “which character is best/worst” sometimes it’s just “where are the holes” when what I prefer is the conversation; “if this is true, then what does that mean in this context, and how do I feel about it?”

This one took a while to write. Put out an essay about the links between fandom and consumerism, and its effect on how we interpret fiction. Hope y'all enjoy!

Folks, I hate to tell you this, but if you spent more time reading actual books, or otherwise engaging with media created by human beings, and less time making up imaginary "tells", you would be much more able to spot AI slop without resorting to a list of "tells".

Please do not try to clock “balanced list of threes” as an AI tell because that’s been classic rhetorical structure for going on three millennia and it’s baked into all our writing now, I‘m begging people to read more old things

Melbourne folks - anyone been to the aquarium with a wheelchair lately? It's been like 10 years since we've been there and their website isn't very encouraging. I'm especially wondering if there's somewhere safe we can be dropped off/picked up?

So, I'm running an informal survey about LARP and neurodiversity, with a focus on autism and ADHD, because I'm super curious about the intersections as an AuDHD larper. Anyone can fill it out, and anyone can see the results: forms.gle/GHCQFuZbf9Fp...

Got sick. Played Crusader Kings 3. My first king was much loved by all, and died while partying. Big shoes to fill for the not-so-well-liked son who was faced with constant rebellions. His wife hated him so I gave him a 2nd, who became his soul mate after exchanging bad poetry.
