Montgomery, AL perfectly illustrates this. In 1955, when Rosa Parks mounted her Bus Boycott, the transit system was **owned by a GM-affiliate** and ran several lines every 10 mins. In the 90s, fixed route bus service was eliminated. And now, no line runs more frequently than every 30 mins.

I argue that the streetcar conspiracy was actually a convenient scapegoat for those who wanted to minimize government's role in transit's failure, and the racism of whites who abandoned integrated systems.

I meet with MAHA activists because a lot of their concerns are bipartisan issues that major corporations paint as partisan. The fight isn't left and right, it's top and bottom.

In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.
It's absolutely insane we've somehow let the Covid recriminations debate become like "why didn't we reopen in person schools before there was a vaccine" and not "why did none of the trump guys go to jail for stealing PPE from New York hospitals in March 2020"

Kirk Rudell@rudell.bsky.social · 3d agoShouldn’t be shocked at any lie RFK Jr tells, but he whined to Dana Bash that businesses were shut down during the pandemic “with no just compensation.” There was an almost trillion dollar PPP loan program, and his organization got millions from it, none of it paid back, to make payroll.
People would rather have the easy lie of this as a "conspiracy" when reality is that streetcar companies were hemorrhaging money because of local laws that made them money pits, while those same local governments liked buses for a variety of legitimate reasons.

It seems relevant that the thing Isaiah is being sent to do in that passage is to deliver a prophecy of doom to his own people for having fallen away from the path of righteousness. So if these guys were like, Isaiah, that would be robustly bad news for...the United States.

More generally, a lot of great recreation spots are poorly served by transit. In NY, getting to beaches or the big state parks or most places upstate is either excruciatingly slow/complicated or just not possible. I know a lot of city folk who keep a car to use on the weekends...
Oh The Urbanity!@ohtheurbanity.bsky.social · 4d agoMy big realization: how many child-related trips (schools, daycares, libraries, parks) don't line up well with transit. Like here. Transit is barely faster than walking (cycling is on par with driving). I've always liked cycling, but I've learned it's even more important for car-free families.

Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.
I think it also revealed just how quickly a bunch of otherwise very hard problems can be to solve with global collective action. The fuckin Ganga was running clear water for the only time in my lifetime because for 2 weeks nobody threw garbage in it. The canals in Venice had fish.

That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.
It’s like whoever ordered this thinks that the concept of people walking and biking in NYC is reserved for special events, as if you can’t find crowds of people walking or biking on sidewalks and in crosswalks and bike lanes around the city, unprotected by bollards and menacingly parked cop cars
