cops hate automated enforcement *because* its fair. They conceptualize their role not as punishing rulebreakers but punishing "bad people" (poors and minorities). They dislike red light/speed cameras because they wind up punishing "good people" for doing something they see as essentially harmless

it's fucking insane that so many people get away with hiding their license plates so that they can get away with running red light cameras and cops mostly don't care (I'm sure some of them do on their personal vehicles too). like this is something where broken windows policing actually makes sense.

i will say this about lindsey graham. he was from south carolina, a state which contains some of the best food you can find in these united states. just incredible cuisine, almost on par with new orleans and new mexico. great place to pig the hell out

The thing is, Chicago also downzoned in the 60s-early 2000s--in fact, a huge chunk of Humboldt Park was downzoned. You will be shocked to hear that this has not prevented gentrification, and that in fact downzoned areas are associated with disproportionate growth of white residents.

seattle downzoned in the 50s - 80s and those neighborhoods are now some of the most expensive in the city - even after sizeable upzones oops

nyc friends be careful outside today. its even worse than yesterday, the 2019 film about a man who remembers the beatles

Okay. So. Obscure Military Holy Orders. Bear with me on this one: In 1687 the French were aggressively expanding their trade and slavery operations on the Gold Coast. As part of this two young West African boys were sent back to France, most likely as slaves. One may have been called "Aniaba". /1🧵

(i remain semi-convinced that liberals spend too much time complaining about the officiating at the language game championships. "previous winners pick the refs for next time" is an inherently corrupted system, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.)
