Shooter was a close reader, full stop, though almost always in a "Romans imitating the Greeks" manner where he could jot off an acceptable simulation that missed the nuances and soul of the source. I'm convinced that fed his arrogance and fueled the ire against him at Marvel.
Tegan O’Neil@teganoneil5000.bsky.social · 5d agoShooter was actually a close reader of Claremont: the X-Men get rolled for most of that event because Shooter was following what was happening in Uncanny and correctly ascertained that group, with those interior stresses, as the X-Men were in 1984 - would get rolled on Battleworld. and they did!
I liked the new Spider-Man movie although it’s sort of like, “What even is Spider-Man as a concept anymore?” We’re never gonna get a movie that works and stands alone like the Raimi movies again, but ah well.
I saw the first Raimi Spider-Man for free because I worked at a movie theater, and now I am seeing the new Spider-Man for free because my son works at a movie theater. I expect him to have a son of his own and Marvel to keep making these movies so that we can keep this tradition alive.

Future historians are going to make a fun little hobby out of trying to puzzle out why Hollywood kept giving him these big movies. Like how they enjoy debating whether those medieval “dancing plagues” were some kind of mass psychological breakdown or if it was just widespread ergot poisoning.

I’m watching that Masters of the Universe movie and it really makes you realize, like, even the most autopilot samey-same MCU movie is generally *charming,* you know? Charm is such an X-factor that will allow an audience to forgive so much. And you can’t fake it, it turns out.
I never got around to mentioning this in our Reign episodes, but I find it extremely charming that the Cyborg Superman’s mechanical hand is on a hinge and just sort of pops off when he needs it to be a Mega Man gun-arm.
