Associate professor at the University of California Merced. Posts are my own. My lab uses zebrafish to study morphogenesis of the endoderm. It's offal-y interesting.
Better late than never! Last month, we posted our preprint on single-cell RNA sequencing of the #zebrafish sox17 lineage — a collaboration among several labs including us, @stefanmaterna.bsky.social and @thelovelylab.bsky.social. A few key takeaways below: 1/3 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Transcriptional divergence of the zebrafish sox17 lineage begins during gastrulation
The endoderm is specified at the onset of gastrulation and subsequently undergoes extensive migration before forming an epithelial sheet that gives rise to multiple organs, including the gut and respi...

I'll be writing a few posts about new features in Micro-Manager. If you are interested in those, please follow @micro-manager.bsky.social.
Development of Micro-Manager code has accelerated quite a bit with availability of the new generation of AI coding tools (and the need to provide functionality for microscopes in our core at UCSF). Follow these developments here: nicost.github.io/microscope-t...

New preprint alert! Led by @qsb-uc-merced.bsky.social grad student Po-Shu Tu from my and Stefan Materna's labs, we found that the receptor tyrosine kinase Met is required for directional migration of #endoderm cells in #zebrafish. But — plot twist! — Met's canonical ligand HGF is dispensable.

The Cooper lab is hiring a postdoc with a strong background in mouse genetics and molecular biology to advance.our gene drive work. Must be extremely organized, engineering-minded, and outcomes-oriented. Spread the word and have interested candidates email me directly.
It was such a pleasure serving on Raeden’s @rae-day.bsky.social thesis committee and seeing her grow as a scientist. The celebratory shot of coconut rum didn’t hurt.
1/ Most importantly, two trainees successfully defended their dissertations in the summer/fall. Dr. Hieu Vo (summer) and Dr. Raeden Gray @rae-day.bsky.social (fall). The first F1s from the Lovely Lab, and we could not be more proud!!!

Read this. ICE can pick up anyone, citizen, legal or no, fly them from their home state to the detention facility in Texas, say Whoopsee & dump you in El Paso. Even if you don't care about other folks, this could happen to YOU. Call Congress! 1/2
