Proud teacher moment: a student picking up on a throwaway remark I made during one of the lectures and making it into the topic of their final paper!

Anyone else having trouble accessing online databases since last week? Seems quite a few (eg. Telma) are offline today. (Note to self: copy all relevant data into your own database while researching in the future.)
Well this is a first: got an automated email from an academic publisher thanking me for requesting an inspection copy of a new publication. I've never heard of this publication, let alone requested a copy and I don't know who did.
Dertig dagen? Ben al blij als mijn volgende boek binnen dertig maanden af is
Just made a very pretty packet of Hebrew, Latin, and Arabic paleography handouts for my @simmonsuniversity.bsky.social LIS students. Anyone want some? Here you go! Feel free to use (but please credit me if you do)...
This is really worrying: the PISA scores on high school student performance are in. Notice the steep decline across disciplines between 2018 and 2025. In the Netherlands, 40% of 15-year olds apparently can't read well enough to function in society. 40%! (Source: nos.nl/l/2630148)

What are the best popular history books about the Middle Ages that you've recently read? Go! #booksky (is that a thing?) #medievalsky
Visited the ruins of Trois Fontaines Abbey today and felt like I was about to encounter a ghost or goblin or something
Binnenkort begint @historicivertellen.bsky.social weer! Er is door onvoorziene omstandigheden een gat in de planning gevallen. Wie zou het leuk vinden om in de week van 7 september over diens historische werk te posten?
(v niche joke) Would have expected the abbey of Montier-en-Der to look a bit more...apocalyptic?
Belangrijke reminder voor iedereen die de neiging heeft om geschiedenis als iets abstracte te zien
Midden in mijn (bibliotheek)boek is op de een of andere manier een verdwaald stukje van een pagina ingebonden geraakt.
So we've got a conflict between pope and emperor on our hands. Who said that medieval history isn't relevant nowadays?

🎧 Benieuwd? Nu overal te beluisteren. Zie links ⬇️ 🧵 1/2
Oh the joys of grading a crusades-related exam question: the amount of implicit prejudice that appears from the way answers are formulated! It seems we still have a long way to go (which is fine - they're still learning!)
This👇. When grading this week, I found myself wondering more than once whether the student was using AI or not, which kinda kills the joy of grading well-written papers
The thing I hate the absolute most about the proliferation of GenAI in "writing" is that I'm now being trained to become suspicious when I read a student paper that is Actually Good, instead of just celebrating its quality and congratulating the student on a Job Well Done.
New publication! From Sorcerer's Son to Epic Hero: (Meta)Poetic Entanglement in Walter of Châtillon's Alexandreis. This one has been some time in the works. Glad to see it finally out! You can read it (open access) here: doi.org/10.21825/jol...
