Fuelled for launch! ⛽ Specialists wearing ‘SCAPE’ suits filled Smile with fuel ahead of its launch on a Vega-C rocket on 9 April. Smile will use 90% of its fuel during the first month in space to gradually elongate its orbit until it ultimately reaches 121 000 km above the North Pole. 🔭 ☀️

Inside a large, clean laboratory with white walls, two people wearing full white protective suits are working on a spacecraft. The spacecraft is mounted on a metal support frame and wrapped in shiny gold thermal foil, with dark rectangular solar panels on its sides. Cables, tools, and test equipment are spread across the floor around them. The scene suggests careful technical work on a satellite in a controlled clean-room environment. The 'Inspector Smile' character is seen waving behind the spacecraft. A speech bubble reads 'Keep it coming! I work best on a full tank'.

The Smile mission will view the full Sun-Earth connection, helping us solve 3️⃣ mysteries: 🌬️ 🌍 What happens where solar wind meets Earth’s magnetic shield? 🌍 ⚠️ What causes magnetic glitches on the dark side of Earth? 🚨 🧲 How can we predict the most dangerous magnetic storms earlier? 🔭 🧪

🚢 Inspector Smile has begun a two-week voyage across the Atlantic, heading for Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. In the early hours of 11 February, Smile left ESA’s technical heart by truck for the Port of Amsterdam, where it was loaded onto the cargo ship MN Colibri. 🔭 🧪

🆕For the first time, astronomers using our Cheops mission have caught a planet triggering flares of radiation from the star it orbits 🪐💥 These tremendous explosions are blasting away the planet’s wispy atmosphere, causing it to shrink every year. Find out more 👉 www.esa.int/Science_Expl... 🔭 🧪

A bright, fiery, orange-yellow star with swooping magnetic field lines, releasing an intense flare of light into space. To the right of the star, there is a small red planet touching one of the star's magnetic field lines. The flare is blasting in the direction of the planet. A haze of gas around the planet seems to be being pushed out into space. The background is filled with stars, giving the impression of deep space.
