Rube: Everything is worse now! Could it be billionaires? Billionaire: "No it's… uhm… what else changed… uhm… SMOKING! Yeah! Everything sucks because no one smokes anymore!" Rube: I dunno… Billionaire: Worth a shot. Rube: Taxing the rich sounds hard, but I can buy smokes today! Billionaire: Atta boy!

I'm calling it: "Start smoking" is going to be mainstream MAHA / Republican health advice by 2028. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

There is no rigorous evidence that Gundry’s lectin-free diet works and may actually be harmful, according to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Gundry has also pushed questionable theories about other health topics too. In an episode on the popular Doctor Mike’s YouTube channel in defense of his diet, Gundry argued that smoking can actually make some people live longer. It finally took my pro-vaccine dad reading Gundry’s Wikipedia page—which includes Gundry’s claim in an abstract that mRNA Covid vaccines “dramatically increase” inflammation—for him to leave me alone on this topic. A Reuters report says that Gundry’s abstract, which also received an extensive correction, doesn’t contain “reliable evidence.” Conversely, research does show that Covid vaccines decrease inflammatory markers when people get a Covid infection.

Nonsense! We all know most outlets' would blindly echo whatever he said verbatim... "Trump: I am viral 40-pound tabby cat named Daddy Cinnamon" …and/or frame it as some sort of masterstroke... "Is Trump even subject to our human rule of law now that he's an overweight cat?"

I don't have data, but I strongly suspect areas where rising costs have vastly outstripped wages have created donut holes where aid remains only available to the low income households even while working and even middle class increasingly struggle to afford things like housing and higher ed.

"Let's make a base of modest, affordable apartments available to the working class" "And then let's rip those apartments away from them when they reach some arbitrarily-low means-tested line because the numbers are calculated from a county near Buffalo" "And let's charge poor people full rent"

As someone who experiences ASMR, I find these suggestive ASMR videos off-putting and think they perpetuate the idea that ASMR is nothing more than an excuse to watch mild porn. That said, I never saw anything ban-worthy and the most sexually suggestive content I see on YouTube these days are in ads.

a bunch of popular ASMR artists lost their channels forever this week, after YouTube cited them for violating terms against "sexually gratifying" content: www.404media.co/youtube-asmr...

It really was about anime being a m segment that could break the western "rules" about what animation could show and blood and titties were paraded in equal measure yeah

There was some part of the zeitgeist that definitely equated anime and pornography. While most of this undoubtedly stemmed from American xenophobia, I feel like at least some early U.S. based marketing of anime didn't help as I vaguely remember sizzle reels that really embraced "ADULT animation".

bsky.app/profile/jack... also directly about your point Suncoast's anime section is in fact directly proving that anime culturally carried a stigma back then

When I started watching in the 90s, the anime section in our local Suncoast was a small section on the bottom of a shelf off to the side and facing away from most foot traffic. It eventually grew to take up the entire back wall, where it was also prominently displayed.

Genuinely impossible to make people understand how much most the United States in the 90s hated and looked down on anime if they didn't live through it.

Given every previous prediction that society would collapse if some group was treated with dignity never came to pass, I'd like to think folks would be a bit more skeptical when told society will crumble if trans people are treated with dignity. And yet here we are. Stay safe.

I figured out why my follower count jumped. I was added to a starter pack by @lmyers-2024.bsky.social. While I am certainly am glad someone likes my relatively infrequent posts enough to include me in a starter pack and also welcome the new followers, it would have been nice if Bluesky notified me.
