What's baffling about how underfunded services are that help faculty get grants is that we bring money into the univ. They care about that overhead. But not enough, I guess, to fund the grant workers because they know faculty are workaholics & will just work more hours if we have less support.

Ever wondered why you can see underwater bubbles: invisible air in invisible water? It's because light bends slightly at the boundary between air & water, so light coming from behind the bubble is diverted away from your eye. The resulting dark line shows you the bubble must be there. Beautiful!

Some "holy shit" synchronicity for you all: My former PhD advisor has not hired any grad students for the past several years, for reasons unbeknownst to his former students. I just received this text from a former lab member explaining why. This is a tenured professor at a T10 university.
