I've seen a few posts getting excited about the upcoming solar eclipse, and referring to the last one being 1999, or that this will be the best one since 1999... ...has everyone collectively forgotten that 2015 happened, where we had 93% totality in Swansea, and clear skies?!

A friend donated this IBM ThinkPad 365X to me, saying "I knew you'd know what to do with it!" I tried an SD to IDE adapter, but that was a no-go. The laptop could see some files, but trying to access them made half disappear. Very odd. The CF to IDE adapter, though? Proof is in the pudding!

Not the first time I've connected an old PC to my own dialup ISP, but the first time the PC and ISP haven't been in the same room, let alone on the same table! The theoretical maximum speed is 33.6 kbps (two modems alone can't hit 56k something something), so 26.4 to the attic and back ain't bad!

The awkward moment when you realise you have zero PCs with known working floppy disk drives, except for the laptop with a FDD in unknown condition that you need to make the floppy disk for 🤣 I did dig out my known working FDD to use on the testbench PC, but there's no FDD port on the motherboard 🙃

Only seven months after I put this testbench PC together, it finally has an operating system on it! 🫣 I've had plenty of other things going on, but I was also agonising about how to partition the drive to get the optimum multiboot scenario, and as a result, it was just sitting around doing nothing.

Been heartening to witness the flood of people helping @morefunmakingit.bsky.social rebuild the Retro Hardware Discord from collective memory, after it got wiped out by a hacker. I wasn't in RHD 1.0, so if there's a silver lining, it's that new people like me just became aware of this community.

In genuine disbelief to have found a SECOND GRAIL?!?! This box of VHS tapes was passed on to me at Chunky Fringe 2025: didn't record them myself, and they're a huge mixed bag, not weighted towards Channel 4, and many of those pre-Digi. To have uncovered the grail that completes a set, as well?! 🏆

Dr. Jamie Nemeth presents: Fun With Frequencies The first image is Freeview on its own, direct from the loft aerial. The second image is the analogue TV signal from my six UHF modulators, without the loft aerial plugged in. The device is a TinySA spectrum analyzer.

I don't want to make rescuing CRT TVs a habit, as I'll very quickly run out of room. But this one came from a garage around the corner from where I lived, being emptied out to go to scrap, and I couldn't let it go to scrap. Ordered a remote on eBay, and then I'll see if teletext works! #CRT #TV

Tonight's the night Isembard's Wheel head to Hotel Brigadoon Pontypridd. We will have a wonderful musical time, and hopefully I'll see friends there if you're near. Just be prepared for me to cling on to my fiddle even more dearly than I usually do, whatever the outcome of the next few hours. 🎻
