when i was working as a translator the few times i was asked to polish up a machine translation i literally just scrapped it all and started over. i'm 100% positive this ended up taking me way less time than if i'd gone along with the client's idea. the pay is awful, too!

It's a loophole companies use as an excuse to underpay translators, and nothing else.
When I worked in loc (outsourcing) I ended up on a small project that was clearly translated with google translate or something of the like, at least for Italian. I had to retranslate the whole game because all verbs in every string used bare infinitive instead of present tense.

The return to physical media is a radical act. A book in your hand or a record on the turntable belong to a world beyond subscriptions, licenses, and corporate permission, and they can be lent, inherited, annotated, repaired, and loved. They remain when the platform fails and the servers die.

Most of what we need to do is (broadly) straightforward and obvious. (Zoom in and there are a million details, few of them trivial, but that’s what work is for.) The problem is that most of the actual solutions are inconvenient to an economic system that requires endless growth.
This is the thing … we can fix the damage we do, lesson our impact, make the earth healthier. We can, if we have the will.
