This is a tale that had to be told. Kate Crane could not allow it to be otherwise and she has wrestled long and hard with the past and emerged with a beautiful and honest book. Buy it. www.yahoo.com/entertainmen...

I would give the President the same advice that I give my mates who are single: If Xi won't call and you want to shoot your shot, it's time to pick up the phone.

PSA to business owners: Don't just pass on the tariff cost to your consumers quietly. Add a line on the bill and explicitly label it "Trump Tariff." Show people *why* it is costing more.
There are 33m companies in the USA. Only 21k employe 500 or more. And they only make up 23% of workers. Trump and Elon are ignoring the more than 32m entrepreneurs that can't afford to build a new factory or pay tariffs or absorb cancelled contracts.
Free trade would be the most effective retaliation against Donald Trump's tariffs. Countries could stop respecting U.S. patent and copyright monopolies deanbaker22.substack.com/p/ignoring-p...
Ignoring Patent Monopolies: Free Trade Retaliation Against Trump
Most forms of retaliation that countries are planning in response to Donald Trump’s tariff-fest involved higher tariffs and import restrictions.

I pitched my NYT editor that folks really need to understand that the deadweight loss of tariffs rises in the square of the tariff rate. Despite the wonkiness of it all, they said yes--as long as you can explain that intuitively. Lemme know how I did:

I’d like to announce my forthcoming US history book, covering a decisive but tumultuous era in that country’s history, titled “The trade policies of the United States: 10:30 am to 1:30 pm on Friday, March 7, 2025” It will be 400 pages.
As Medicaid cuts become a possibility, it's key to understand the scope of the program and its many names. H/t to @jessicacalarco.bsky.social and @larivera.bsky.social for the idea and to Melissa Hafner at @airinforms.bsky.social for further context. finance.yahoo.com/news/medicai...
Medicaid goes by many names. Will Americans realize if it gets cut?
States, which administer federal Medicaid funds, often change the name of the program to get more people to sign up. Studies find this causes confusion about who benefits from the program.

How Trump's federal worker layoffs will hit beyond Washington
While federal workers are concentrated around Washington, D.C., there are thousands more in cities throughout the country. Laying them off will impact those local economies.

Here's what the federal government does for you
As pandemonium descended Tuesday after the Trump administration directed a freeze on federal funding, the chaos drove home a salient point: The federal government does a lot for you.

This point right here. The government works in so many ways that people don't notice until it is taken away and by that time it is too late.
