Yesterday we said goodbye to our technician and former undergrad Dante Ashih. He'll be starting his Biology PhD at the University of Wisconsin at Madison this fall. Dante developed the Wormtrails package for viewing C. elegans movement, and we can't wait to see the great science he explores next!

My former undergad Juli Stanley gave an awesome PhD dissertation talk on how E. coli translates mRNAs that do not have a leader sequence (no Shine-Dalgarno 🤯)! It was such a joy to see them shine so brightly! We had a mini lab reunion too, with Juli and former grad student Jodie Schiffer.

It is also genuinely thrilling and exciting to discover something new. Every time when it happens, when you can feel all the fog clearing and the insight emerge is magic, like everything clicks into place. That pure feeling keeps me wanting to do research more than anything else. It’s the best.

Fun read! Another classic example is Cynthia Kenyon's discovery that loss of the insulin receptor DAF-2 extends lifespan in C. elegans, which came out of the control for a clever mutant screen in which progeny of single F2s are sent into dauer with daf-2(ts) to track lifespan of the parent.

One last piece of news to cap off the year.... the Lee lab is now funded by an ✨NSF CAREER✨!!! We'll explore how transgenerational inheritance affects the earliest decisions in C. elegans embryos AND build new CUREs for our first-gen students. 🪱🧬 This is how we feel about being funded! 👇
