RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) often bind numerous transcripts - but do they act through a network effect? Our new paper in @plosbiology.org shows that the highly conserved LIN28 RBP controls developmental timing in C. elegans larvae through only two targets. doi.org/10.1371/jour... 1/n

Love this question! I have wanted to study it for C. elegans amphid dendrite diameters. Do the diameters increase as the dendrites double in length across larval development? What about in mutants with short heads? I thought it would be too tricky to measure but this paper gives me hope!

I'm glad @carlbergstrom.com posted this. I received one today, and a couple in the last few months, and was wondering if others were receiving them and how they were responding. Overall I've felt like I'd rather risk wasting my time than risk ignoring someone who's genuinely curious.

I came across your work on C. elegans neuronal and glial morphogenesis, especially the idea that many structures are built on epithelial scaffolds.

I am not asking about a lab opening or a project. I was curious about one small developmental genetics judgment.

When a neuron or glial cell has the wrong shape in C. elegans, what is usually the first evidence that tells you the defect is in that cell's own morphogenesis program rather than in the scaffold or attachment it is trying to build on?

Thank you for your email and question. If we have a mutant that alters neuron or glia shape, our next step is to identify the gene that is disrupted in that mutant. Then, we can use genetic methods to restore that gene's function in the affected cell in an otherwise mutant individual, or to remove that gene's function from that cell in an otherwise normal individual.  These experiments tell us if the gene acts in the affected cell to control its morphology, or if it acts in some other cells instead.

1. Over the last few days I have received a set of queries about my research. The first one I thought was legitimate, and I was planning to answer when the second arrived, and then the third, from the same sender. Viewed together, they’re clearly LLM generated.

Not sure what they think buzzwords like "impact beyond the institution" mean but I received a WPI packet with a 14-page document titled "external impact" and it is all citation metrics and journal impact factors -- this is NOT a step forward in scholarly assessment of scientific contributions.

#2 Change the tenure and promotion structure. WPI pilot (below). MSU Pilot > public engagement, entrepreneurship, etc. (NOTING: so soooo much focus on the private sector...) (Also, this is all fine, but the VP said he wants to destroy universities so like, what are we doing here?)

Fun read! Another classic example is Cynthia Kenyon's discovery that loss of the insulin receptor DAF-2 extends lifespan in C. elegans, which came out of the control for a clever mutant screen in which progeny of single F2s are sent into dauer with daf-2(ts) to track lifespan of the parent.

Twice now, I have emailed Percival Scientific about minor issues with our 15-year-old incubator and, both times, they replied within hours with technical documents on how to fix it myself. So good when companies empower customers to maintain and repair equipment ourselves! This is the way.
