Fantastic interview. Two amazing young musicians who can say, "We don't think of theory...We just follow literally our ears, like what sounds good and what feels right." www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGLF...

Perfect first line of a short story: "So I bought a little city (it was Galveston, Texas) and told everybody that nobody had to move, we were going to do it very gradually, very relaxed, no big changes overnight."
Look Bluesky. I insist. Stop what you're doing. Read this now. It's like nothing else. Trust me. You won't regret it.

Happy Birthday to Roscoe Mitchell! One of the most artistically ruthless (in the best way imaginable) musicians of all time.
it's roscoe mitchell's birthday and as is tradition i must post one of my all-timer dogs on album covers
I'm going through Downbeats from 20+ years ago, when all the labels were reissuing remastered versions of their deep catalog on CD for like $10-12. Now we can get many of those same albums again, but only on vinyl and only if we want to pay 3-4x the price. The early aughts were good for jazz nerds.

The way the history of pop was warped by boomer criticism/historiography into a hard dividing line between a supposed glop past and Elvis-and-everything-after with a rock focus was a massive reductive mistake that is still playing out.
Jazz OTD: On August 3, 1964, Wayne Shorter recorded "Juju" - one of his truly great Blue Note albums, showcasing his skill as a composer as well as improviser - with McCoy Tyner (p), Reggie Workman (b), and Elvin Jones (d). #jazzsky

One of Charlie Parker’s greatest studio sessions took place on this day 73 yrs ago, 7/30/53. Confirmation/Now’s The Time/I Remember You, multiple takes of Chi Chi, an A-flat blues. I learned these solos as a kid. Beautifully balanced, swinging trio: Haig/Heath/Roach. www.youtube.com/watch?v=82kS...
