This @jessicogs.bsky.social piece is fantastic. An honest, delicate exploration of how badly corporations can alienate audiences.
We really do need to bring back shaming people who sell out. Like, I get that there's a degree of "get that bag!" we all want to encourage in a world where so many are struggling, but also sacrificing the cool thing you built for a chunk of cash is so plainly shitty to do.
Welp. My entire team at Gamespot has been fired, so I'm more available than usual for freelance work. Also affiliate revenue consulting for anyone who wants to actually make money off of commerce content.
Lmao sick, I just got laid off from GameSpot while on paid medical leave recovering from a gunshot wound.
I think if you needed any more evidence that the cuts are shortsighted and focused on cutting as deep and as fast as possible with little regard for the future, this is pretty definitive. That engine felt like magic in some spots. A colossal waste of talent and resources.

I don't think we’ve quite come to terms with the impact of ID software loosing a reported 50% staff, including all of engineering. That’s one of the most important studios of all time cut at the knees and their incredible engine, basically dead. I don’t have the words for how angry it makes me

This has such a huge impact on people in rural areas who have to deal with ISP monopolies with unusable speeds. The industry wants to act like the infrastructure is there for this to be the way forward, but big tech is just trying to leave poor people behind.
