I have, with my own eyes, watched my tax dollars in the form of missiles as they hit buildings inhabited by civilians. I'd much prefer subsidizing a grocery story I don't use.
Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.

We still hear assertions that adding renewables to the grid has increased the UK’s electricity costs. I looked at two sources of data and plotted one against the other to test whether there’s any trut...

What happens when productivity rises, but workers don’t get more time back? Drawing on @julietschor.bsky.social’s decades of research, Steve Early and Suzanne Gordon examine the renewed push for a 32-hour work week—and the labor power it would take to make it widespread.
A 4-Day Work Week Sounds Great. How Do We Get One?
Workers deserve far more time off the job. But getting to a shorter work week will require a labor movement that can wield power to extract such demands.

Seattle has almost no benches anywhere. It limits pedestrians because a lot of people would take a bus and walk downtown if they could sit down. They would buy more food, and have more conversations with friends. There would be more old people keeping things calm.
Stop the city of Saskatoon from removing downtown benches! "This is a shortsighted, costly, offensive, and backwards decision. The benches in downtown Saskatoon serve everyone and are more than just places to sit." www.change.org/p/keep-the-b... #yxe #saskatoon #treatysix #urbanplanning

The extraordinary wildfire outbreak across Oregon, eastern Washington, and southern British Columbia has become even more alarming amid critical fire weather conditions. Over 500,000 acres have already burned in OR & WA alone, and that number could be >1 million acres by Mon.
I think a lot of people outside of the Western US don't know that wildfires are generally not put out. They're contained.
I wrote this for Chicago magazine about the U.S. government's plans to close the National Archives branch in Chicago:
At a time when dubious information runs rampant, we need more — not less — access to our history.
In a buried report, oil regulators pinpointed nearly 600 wells operating illegally, threatening Oklahoma’s drinking water. Then there were 1,400+ wells that had operated for decades without any limits at all — grandfathered in from an earlier era. (Published March w/ @readfrontier.bsky.social)
Oil Regulators Found Hundreds of Wells Violating Oklahoma Rules. Then They Ignored Their Findings.
Oklahoma took on an ambitious project to catalog all of the state’s injection wells, which shoot toxic waste generated by oil drilling back into the ground. Despite records showing risk of drinking wa...

I am still so incredibly pleased and grateful for how well the cleanup went this past Sunday!
Yesterday’s 20th Street Cleanup with Queer Compass YXE and 7th Generation Rising exceeded expectations. ▫️ Around 50 volunteers showed up in the heat to take care of the land and community in Saskatoon’s core.
We hope to organize another big cleanup with Queer Compass in the spring. In meantime we’ll still be at CUMFI every Sunday from 11-12 for our weekly cleanup. Join us! ▫️ Thanks again everyone! - @jessicamdewitt.bsky.social
