I would like to say I can’t believe a professional writing org would send out a message like this, but since I lived through the RWA implosion… 😬 And I agree with every point Chuck makes here, which is well worth the read! In short: writers write, they don’t prompt the plagiarism machine.

Professional writer organizations should not send out pro-AI propaganda in the form of tantrum-having "essays" to their members, and I don't think that's controversial.

I am officially a Ruiner of Lives™ and one Reginald VonSnoot would like to lodge a complaint with management because I stopped throwing the ball in order to work on silly human things.

Oof, the doc now thinks that Dad is entering Alzheimer’s, not just dementia. Earliest appointment with a specialistic is in November, but I think she maybe impressed on him the importance of the MRI, which he has agreed (again) to get without anesthesia. Fingers crossed his resolution holds.

Okay, time to make some words on this new project! Let’s see where I left our intrepid MCs last week... “Where was []? Had he survived? *How many* had survived?” So things are going great. 😂

Today’s incredibly niche advice: If you’re going to the Death Cab for Cutie concert tonight at The Greek Theatre, and you’re seated in the upper sections, TAKE SUNGLASSES. The lighting is way too bright, very flashy (as in flashing), right in your eyes, & headache inducing. Sunglasses helped.

OMG, this, so much this. This would be AMAZING. Once an email I need to respond to but haven’t passes a certain period of time, I’m probably NEVER going to respond because I can’t look at how long it’s been without violently cringing away in shame.

Oh, and also: we need to normalize shame jubilees. We should hit the point where someone sends you an five month old email and they're like, "Hey, I'm finally responding because I'm on my shame jubilee" and you're like "Oh, that's awesome, I'm so glad you're having one right now!"

Bargains are both treacherous and powerful in my fantasy rom-com Enchanting the Fae Queen! stephanieburgis.com/books/enchanting-the-fae-queen PS: if you're in the US or CA, today is your last chance to snap it up for just $2.99! us.macmillan.com/books/978125... #romancelandia #FridayFling

Queen, by Stephanie Burgis, shows a mischievously grinning woman with long blonde curls, a moonstone crown, a pink dress and bare feet, sitting perched in a tree teasing the uniformed general who stands before her, his expression determined and one of his hands around her closest leg while she pokes his strong nose with one finger. Vines of leaves sweep magically out from the tree around her to draw him towards her. The tagline reads: All’s fae in love and war. The text beside and below it reads:
By the light of the will-o’-the-wisps that danced in the tent above them, Gerard watched Lorelei’s cheeks pinken with her long, luxuriant sip of fae wine. The exacting fae bargain might have allowed a mere drop in her throat to suffice—but of course, Lorelei would never do anything by half-measures. Gerard felt something twist deep inside his stomach as she lowered the jug at last and her eyes reopened, silver glitter sparkling decadently on the tips of her long eyelashes.
Gods. Had it been self-destructive madness, after all, to insist upon sharing a tent tonight?
No. This was the best chance he would ever have of working out her most elusive truths. He couldn’t walk away now.

Every Friday, share a #FridayFling snippet from your WIP or published work. :) This week’s prompt is BARGAIN! You don’t have to match it exactly, just go with vibes. And if it’s published, drop a link in the post or a reply so people can find it! #Romancelandia #BookSky

#FridayFling. Every Friday, post a snippet of your work that includes the prompt (or something close).

July 31, 2026’s prompt is: BARGAIN.

Snippets from all genres welcome. Remember to use alt text if you post an image!

I have a folder of the final Word documents for my books, and I search it every week for the #FridayFling prompts. This week, the first book I opened and the first match of the word turned out to be perfect, which rarely happens! 🎉

I just saw in Publishers Lunch a book that went to a 14-house auction and won a SEVEN FIGURE contract is being pulled by the agent after questioning the author over suspected AI use. Publishers will give millions to a fucking AI book, while the rest of us are out here scrabbling for peanuts. :/

Just had the most frustrating experience with UPS, who refused to hold a package despite the vacation hold, ignored the deliver to neighbor instructions, and now tells me I can pick it up at the UPS center in the city I’m not currently in. ARGH. “Contact the sender” was their solution.

This is the goodest boy who’s helping me work today—where “work” means strengthening my arm muscles because BALL IS LIFE, and he would happily run after it for eight hours straight. 😂

A gray stand poodle sitting prettily on a wooden deck with a teal rocking chair in the background.

I sat outside for most of the day yesterday—IN THE SHADE—and still ended up a little crispy around the edges. So today’s plan: sunscreen and a long-sleeve shirt. The weather at my bestie’s house is making me want to move, because it’s 79F here (in a heat advisory!) and 94F at home. 😭

Lynne Freeman got a write up in the fucking New Yorker to turn people against Tracy Wolff and it absolutely fucking sucks that all the people who read that salacious piece will never know that Lynne Freeman lied to the court, conducted this litigation in bad faith, and had absolutely zero case.

I'm not letting AI horseshit maneuver me into a defensive position with my writing. I write like I write. I love emdashes. I keep using emdashes. Whatever we write, AI will take and copy it -- all you can do is keep writing the best shit you can write in the form you want it to take, and fuck it.

Authors and journalists are doing more first-person (hello 2010s blogging) and embracing "mistakes" in writing to prove they're not chatbots. There's even an “anti-Grammarly" app that leaves in typos and signs off "sent from my iPhone" to create more authenticity: www.wired.com/story/more-t...

Someone created a Playstation account with my email address, and the email says contact support if this happens. I can only talk to a real person if I login to my account… that I didn’t create. ARGH. Every single service needs a “this wasn’t me” button in their account confirmation emails.

Today’s book spam is from a “senior editor” at HarperCollins, inquiring about whether I’m working with any publishing partners for SILVER & BLOOD, a book published by, you guessed it, HARPER FUCKING COLLINS. They’re using an editor’s actual name, too, but sending from a gmail address. Ugh.
