Species names are commonly treated as unique identifiers, but how similar are they really? How far apart are congeneric species names? By analysing the scientific names of over 𝟐𝟎𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬, we found some interesting results. 🪸🦀🦈

How similar are species names and why does this matter for biodiversity data

Standardising taxonomic names is an essential step in biodiversity studies to ensure robust data aggregation and up-to-date, valid species nomenclature. Fuzzy (inexact) matching is widely used in this...

Congratulations to our @esme-ashe.bsky.social for winning one of the @biogeography.bsky.social poster award at #TIBS2026. Well deserved! 🎉

It was great to meet so many other Early Career Researchers at our #TIBS2026 mixer last night - both catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. To celebrate all the ECR Biogeographers, we have created a starter pack so you can follow all the exciting work being done: go.bsky.app/KvnmdnK

New technologies are revolutionising ecology, with more data than ever available at our fingertips. But what are the costs and perils of ecologists doing less field work? Interviews with several BES members in this fascinating @nature.com article

‘I rarely get outside’: scientists ditch fieldwork in the age of AI

In the race to embrace new technologies, some ecologists fear their field is losing touch with nature.

Precioso. Muchas gracias Adri, mola

University reputations and finances often hinge on their position in global ranking tables that prioritize narrow aspects of academic life. Elizabeth Gadd writes about three changes that would give institutions the freedom to explore fresh ways of working. #Academicsky 🧪

To reform universities, first tackle global rankings

Universities are in thrall to a rankings system that prioritizes narrow aspects of academic life. Three changes would give institutions the freedom to explore fresh ways of working.

#asimov nailed the definition of how those who mix liberal and illiberal views understand government: "She hadn't liked Earth (...) its combination of anarchy in the important things and governmental force in the little things." —In the description of Eugenia Insignia in Nemesis (1989)

Interesting article about rethinking the Turing test, putting the focus on discriminating different aspects of "intelligence" (whatever this diffues concept is), and also on IA safety and biases. It seems more important to detect unsafe IAs and how to tackle the pervasive biases in their training

AI language models killed the Turing test: do we even need a replacement?

Chatbots now ace the mathematician’s famous imitation game, but imitation never equalled intelligence.
