Chicago teen shares his experience in ICE detention centers: I am 18 years old and I just graduated from high school in Chicago. I was in ICE detention for 2 months and 10 days. They kept me in solitary for 2 days for no reason, alone in a room with just a toilet. They never let us go outside.

ORR was created in 1980 to resettle refugees fleeing war and persecution. Since the early 2000s, the agency has also been charged with housing unaccompanied migrant children arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, like Aurora's daughter.
The care of these children has historically been walled off from immigration enforcement. A 2008 law sought to ensure they were placed in the least restrictive setting and released from detention as soon as safely possible, regardless of their sponsors’ legal status.

The Trump administration has taken a drastically different approach. Since January 2025, the data shows, ORR has shared more than 460,000 “leads” with ICE about unaccompanied children, their sponsors -- usually parents or other relatives -- and additional household members, leaving them vulnerable to detention and deportation.

If one were to imagine an alternate timeline in which Kamala Harris won the 2024 election—persuading voters for whom pessimism about the economy was often the dominant issue—perhaps the decisive episode to revisit would be the death of Joe Biden’s Build Back Better legislative package. This, as much as any, may have been the moment when reality forked. Under the plan an estimated 3.4 million Americans would have gained health insurance, families would have saved thousands each year on childcare, and 35 million households would have been able to rely on monthly payments from an enhanced child tax credit, among many other provisions to make life more affordable. Its collapse helped convince voters who wanted solutions to the insecurity created by inflation and the long-simmering crisis of inequality that Democrats lacked the necessary fighting spirit. The legislation passed the House and had support from every Democrat in the Senate—except one.

Cities are humanity's greatest invention.

Where opportunity, creativity, culture and democracy come together. Cities are where people who are different from one another learn how to live together. Cities are where innovation happens because people encounter new ideas, new neighbors and new possibilities. That's always been Seattle's story, and we have an opportunity, a responsibility, to write the next chapter.

A report on the ground from the ICE shooting in Biddeford that should make every parent in this country lose their minds:

Cecelia Humiston, 22, lives on Chapel Street. She was asleep with her two-year-old son when she woke up to the sounds of a commotion on surrounding streets.

When she went to investigate, she saw what appeared to be a person lying on the ground on Pool Street.

She remembers hearing an older woman with a distressed family, yelling, “You took her dad, you took her dad!”

“They were with a little girl, she couldn't have been older than three,” Humiston said. “She was still in her Bluey pajamas.”

Humiston described law enforcement as “rude,” and said they barricaded family’s car from leaving. Another yelled at the little girl, who was trying to smell flowers.
