Anyway, I know there is another world of Belgian beer out there - young, diverse, and progressive - but it does sometimes feel as if the old bastions are calcified beyond rescue. And then they'll mew about declining sales and closing pubs.

In 2021, UK income tax personal allowance frozen at £12,570, 26.6m paid income tax at the basic rate of 20%. 2026-27: 31.4m liable to pay income tax at 20%. In 2021, 6.47m pensioners paid income tax. 2026-27: 9.58m pensioners liable to income tax. Govt must relieve poverty. End stealth tax.

This is how the Chancellor can increase the personal allowance and lift millions out of hardship

Sustained economic growth can’t be achieved without a major boost to the purchasing power of the bottom 50% of the population

Counterpoint: paying tax on your income is a marker of an inclusive, redistributive society. Everyone who doesn't pay tax is lined up in the sights of the right wing as a scrounger. Start it at 10%. Start it at 5% if you want. But don't pretend a high number of people *not paying tax* is good.

In the 1960s/70s there was a big corporate push to replace local ales & diverse styles of beer in the UK w/ mass produced lagers & slop. In response, the Campaign for Real Ale, started by beer fans, has been one of the most successful consumer campaign ever. camra.org.uk/about/who-we...

About the Campaign for Real Ale

CAMRA is considered one of the most successful consumer organisations across Europe. Founded by four real ale enthusiasts back in 1971, today we represent beer drinkers and pub-goers across the UK.

Oktoberfest time! A reminder that only two of the six breweries exclusively allowed to sell beer there are not owned by brewing conglomerates: Hofbräuhaus: State of Bavaria Augustiner: Independently owned Spaten, Löwenbräu: AB InBev Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr: part of a group, 30% owned by Heineken

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world. This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵

OBSERVED EFFECTS OF UBI

No significant reduction in labor supply (38 studies meta-analysis)

Increased self-employment (301%) and part-time employment (17%)

Slight decrease in alcohol and tobacco use (31 studies meta-analysis)

New mothers extend their maternity leaves

Birth weights improve due to better maternal nutrition

Graduation rates and educational outcomes improve

Hospitalization rates decline (8.5%)

Crime goes down (15%–42%) especially illegal hunting (95%)

Domestic violence decreases (30%–51%)

Trust increases (13% in politicians | 6% in other people)

Home ownership rates increase (17%–26%)

Food security increases as does consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables

Improved cognitive functioning (43%) and personality traits (31%)

Savings go up, debts go down

The amount of Amazon workers relying on SNAP and Medicaid has nearly tripled since 2020 — while Amazon’s annual profits soared by over 550%. It’s the same story everywhere: corporate profits are at record highs, while workers’ share of the economy is at a record low. We must unrig the system.
