Transitioning for me felt like I was out of the tutorial stage and actually playing the game. And playing the game is terrifying because now there are stakes.

This means that in order to achieve happiness you actually have to put in the effort of love, socialization and self-criticism. All of which will still be painful and fraught with difficulty.

People get demoralized when transitioning when they discover that beyond the initial identification of "the problem," transitioning itself will not make you happy. What it provides is the POSSIBILITY for happiness by allowing you to more easily participate in romance, community and self-improvement

Working really hard toward fixing your failures and inequities does not in fact require you to feel like a piece of shit. You can just do what you have to do quietly, or with a sense of humor, or even just pure delusional optimism. The work itself is what actually matters.
