Check out the @voxeu.org column summarising our paper on AI adoption in Europe and the US 👇 We document differences in AI adoption rates of workers and firms, investigate explanations for these differences, and assess what this implies for productivity growth 💡 cepr.org/voxeu/column...
Documenting AI adoption in the US and Western Europe and correlating adoption rates with worker and firm characteristics, from Alexander Bick, Adam Blandin, David J. Deming, Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, and Jonas Jessen www.nber.org/papers/w34995
The sheer size of the child penalty in labor markets (worldwide) makes it so important. Here's a new study digging deeper. @jonasjessen.bsky.social @kinnelavinia.bsky.social
Why the motherhood penalty persists: Our analysis shows that declines in general competencies like numeracy account for at most 10% of the long-term child penalty in earnings, suggesting that gender norms, not skill depreciation, remain the primary driver of inequality.

But we hear all the time that GDP is growing 2% or 3%, so how is that possible? That’s because the US population is growing (especially the adult population, age 20+) GDP has grown 2.3% a year since 2010 But GDP per adult only 1.3%
📢 Very happy to see our paper "Child penalties in labour market skills" (w/ @jonasjessen.bsky.social & @michelebattisti.bsky.social) out in the special issue on "Education, Health, and Gender: A Family Perspective" of the European Economic Review. Link (open access): doi.org/10.1016/j.eu... More ⤵️
It has become received wisdom in Brussels and Washington that there is a new “euro-sclerosis”: that the EU economy is lagging the US This view is wrong A little primer on the measurement of productivity – and why reports of the economic death of Europe are greatly exaggerated🧵
🚨 New paper alert: Exclusionary political rhetoric alone can drive people to leave their hometowns In Poland, anti-LGBTQ resolutions by 100 local governments caused a rise in migration intentions, reflected in job search Here’s what @jangromadzki.bsky.social and I found: 🧵
The lack of spines among tech CEOs is pathetic... 🤮 Of course, the European leaders did the same to some degree, but at least this was to save Ukraine 💙💛
Incredible clip of tech CEOs fawning over Donald Trump. Someone store this clip in the underground archive vault
In January 2026 the excellent Perspectives on (Un-)Employment PhD Workshop is taking place, organised by @iabnews.bsky.social & @fauwiso.bsky.social 🏗️ Keynotes: Paula England & David Dorn 💡 Deadline: 30 September 2025 Aimed at: PhD Students in economics & sociology More info: shorturl.at/jATG3
It's fantastic that the network is saved. But IZA as an institute closing down is still a tremendous loss
Unfortunately, the "institute" itself has not found a new home. only its most tangible assets, the network and the discussion paper series, remain. Its postdoc program, the international campus in Bonn with its vibrant guest program, the workshop series, and the summer school, remain lost.

Incredible feeling to finally see it published 🤩 What are the macro effects of making UI more generous? In this paper we seek to answer this contentious question 📝 We find increases in aggregate unemployment, driven by both longer UI durations & increased inflows 💡

A lot of attention is rightfully on gender inequalities in the labour market and, to a lesser degree, on inequalities in unpaid work ⚖️ But men falling behind in education and the lack of debate around this is also a big societal problem. Great paper 👇
