Today we (re-)launched preserve.games, a gateway (or link list) of video game preservation organizations, open source tools, public resources, and much more. Check it out! hitsave.org/introducing-...

Read more about this project on our site, and learn how you can suggest improvements and additional resources to be added! We've got a pretty good list going, but we KNOW there's plenty more! hitsave.org/introducing-...

Introducing preserve.games: A Gateway Into Video Game Preservation

Here at Hit Save, we believe that the game preservation community at large can do more for the cause than any one organization can ever do alone. The hard part of becoming a member of the community is...

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our latest project: preserve.games, a browsable catalog of organizations, museums, projects and communities dedicated to video game preservation! If you've ever wondered how to get involved or where you can learn more, this is the site for you!

The new Game Boy Enhance model, the AGBM-02, is finally here! This is a replacement board for the AGBM-01, and uses AA batteries. For the uninitiated, my Game Boy Enhance design is a circuit-level recreation of the original GBA - it requires the use of the original CPU, so it's not emulation! 🧵

Happy 23rd birthday to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the BioWare RPG that took us back to an even LONGER time ago in that same galaxy far, far away! We don't have any KOTOR content in our archive (yet), so instead we'll be highlighting this E3 2001 demo video from @noclipvideo.bsky.social!

Gotta nip this in the bud: These games are not unaccounted for. The ICS's collections were owned by the Computerspielemuseum and the USK ratings board. They still own them. This museum project is on the cusp of shutting down, but the games themselves are not going to a dumpster

Sorry but we'll never shy away from an excuse to highlight one of the rarest items in our archive: Check out some clips of Nintendo veteran Steve Okimoto introducing the GBA to Nintendo of America employees for the first time! This tape is dated 9/22/00, nearly 8 months prior to the GBA's US launch!

Happy birthday to the Game Boy Advance, which released in the USA on this day in 2001! Can you believe Nintendo's potent little handheld is a quarter-century old this year? We feel old.

We've got an extra special addition to our archive to announce today: Nintendo 1991 Funente Oy, a Point-Of-Sale VHS tape from Finland that contains 24 different late 80s Nintendo commercials in better quality than we can find anywhere else online! Read more here: hitsave.org/high-quality...

Special thanks to @kazoodac.bsky.social for providing a bit of historical and cultural context as well! Who else remembers getting swept up in the Episode I hype?

Star Wars: Episode I Racer turns 27 years old today! Back in 2024 we premiered some high quality VHS captures of #StarWars Episode I Racer TV and retail ads from Germany to the internet, and today's a pretty great excuse to highlight them again! youtu.be/kWT3o369TtE?...

Also of note is this huge stack of Japanese tapes that our director @jonasrosland.bsky.social brought back from his recent trip to Japan! There's some interesting stuff in here too, including a few that @kelslewin.bsky.social will appreciate! 🦢

I've updated retrogamecabling.com with more systems, more custom items, better color handling, updated all the examples, and also an example from my own messy setup. It looks MUCH better in this view than in real life, haha :) Take a look!

Have a retro gaming setup but struggling to map out the mess of cables? Our director @jonasrosland.bsky.social just launched a webapp designed to plan out pathways for composite, S-video, component, SCART, VGA, and HDMI! Give it a try and feel free to leave feedback! retrogamecabling.onrender.com

UPDATE: Both URLs work, but its official new home is retrogamecabling.com! @jonasrosland.bsky.social will be working to squash bugs and add new features in the coming weeks!

With David Rosen's death, bad information about Sega as a company is starting to re-emerge across the internet. I will try to give a very condensed version of the Sega corporate shenanigans here as to clear some of the air. 🧵

This tape also featured this delightful 30 second trailer of nonstop dog ninja action! There's nothing in the rulebook that says a dog can't be a stealthy ninja warrior!

With the GDC schedule live, I can let you all know that I will be speaking for the second year in a row. I'll be breaking down how we made TMNT: Tactical Takedown happen in 18 months. I'll talk big stuff, little stuff, challenges, and celebrations! schedule.gdconf.com/session/buil...

Welp. @amandafarough.ca and I are writing our annual trends look back / look ahead. As part of this process, we re-read last year’s for the first time in 12 months. We intentionally do not think about it all year, because we don’t want it to taint our analysis and we want to come back to it fresh…

I say this with zero irony: if you are even tangentially a part of a retro video game community, it is your civic duty to push back against this company and shun anyone who doesn't. This is fascism tapping gently at the door and as soon as you let it in, it's going to invite its friends.

How often do sequels live up to or surpass the original? The Sims 2 sure did, and it turns 21 years old today! In honor of the occasion, we've just added the Sims 2 Double Deluxe to our archive. This version came with a bonus disc containing trailers, wallpapers, music, and tutorials from the devs!
