i am not really keeping up with the culture wars or whatever but are the people who want trans kids out of sports and the people who want blood sports where you're allowed to take PEDs the same people?

Tarot Card Reader: and this is the Death card Me: well i hear that could mean lots of things, not necessarily… Tarot Card Reader: and this is the Later On Today card Me: … Tarot Card Reader: this one is the King of Chewing Your Food Real Good Me: at least… Tarot Card Teader: he’s upside down

llm's are very weird as like, a technology in comparable use to cars but far less harmful but far more stigmatized. i don't have any idea how to approach the subject really. a lot of people have to use them for their job and are not monsters. also they can do a lot of cool things.

thread of various odyssey thoughts, no attempt to make this spoiler-free so mute the thread if you can or w/e if that's important.

everyone explaining that biden can't do anything because the presidency doesn't have any real power -> trump taking the presidency and collapsing the world order unilaterally -> mamdani doing something as ny mayor and people explaining that he can only do that because of the office's power.

I think it's good that Mamdani is Just Doing Stuff but more people gotta realize that it is not a matter of Will or motivation or whatever but because the NYC Mayor, as an office, is one of the uniquely powerful individual offices you can hold in the United States (seriously)

i like the emily wilson piece on nolan's adaptation of the odyssey. i find it refreshing when people say things and have complex and reasoned opinions based on expertise in a thing. that's mostly what drew me to classics, it is sort of the only reason anyone is in that major.

reading up on seattle gangs after the shooting this weekend and "obviously everyone has heard of stuff like the bloods, crips and SPD." sent me.

hello bsky, can someone who is an esteemed expert of hetero culture please explain to me — what in the f’ck did i just watch??

i have been ~trolling my partner by calling all ceo's "[business] jeff" depending on which business they're ceo of for the last three years or something, and she recently countered by calling our friend "friendship jeff" after he came over to help with some house stuff.

the thing about having actual principles is that when a politician I respect does some stupid shit I can just be like, “that sucks, knock it off” instead of inventing an imaginary world where I’m forced to defend stupid shit for procedural 4d chess reasons

the thing i don't get about this is like, at some point if you are left-leaning and at all popular, x becomes acutely unpleasant to be on. like you're getting actively harassed and stalked and shit. how does that not cause people to leave?

The decision of so many people to keep using X in its race-war phase has made me a bit more cynical overall about the ability to draw moral red lines. It’s beyond disappointing.

a really weird thing about the us is that after people get deported nobody is like "well we'll just check in on how they're doing outside the country". like, there just aren't stories about how people outside the country are doing, in general. hard to explain how weird that is.

having enough ethics to recognize that elon musk murdered a bunch of people is dangerous because if you are not careful you can accidentally get to a point where you think you should also be held accountable for how your own actions affect people. fine in small doses, but a dangerous path.

the first thing i was told in my first grad level stats class was that the course was intended to teach us about causal reasoning in statistics but that it any of us ever wanted to do statistics in the real world we should not do that, and should instead hire a statistician. advice to live by imo.

a type of patriarchal white supremacy in this country is that the worst white men imaginable get articles written about them in the paper where a writer claims to care about their reasons for being so horrible and implies that a reader should care as well.

My fave angle of analysis on the Odyssey is via viewing it as a state-owned attempt to write Athens into the center of a part of ~Greek history which Athens is extremely non-central to, which you see mostly by Athena showing up in a bunch of places she makes no sense in.

this is the part of going through the motions of pretending they're trying to end the soccer game while all the fans know that shakira will be coming on again for another short set if they applaud long enough
