you know that feeling where you write a grant application in 2024, are awarded the grant in 2025, the funds show up in 2026, and so you order lots of expensive scientific equipment, and the final pieces show up *literally* an hour before you have to leave for fieldwork? Yeah, I got that now.

The point isn't to produce essays, it's to teach students how to think for fuck's sake. The minute you automate that, it's over. You might as well close the course. Which they're also doing. This is an attack on learning, and everyone is just shrugging.

There are many factors that determine wildfire activity. Low winter snowpacks, which lead to drier conditions and low soil and fuel moisture levels, are looking like a strong predictor this year in BC. Current wildfire map and mid-April snowpack levels for your consideration.

Always good to keep in mind that it does not matter how the fire starts. Fires start all the time, but what really matters is the high heat and low humidity to dry out fuels causing the fire to spread rapidly. And these conditions are increasing every year with anthropogenic climate change.

Climate change does not cause wildfires, but hot and dry conditions make them much more likely to spread. In Canada, 9 of the 10 worst wildfire years were both dryer and hotter than normal. And these fires are burning in areas that were historically not managed or suppressed.

As bad as this article sounds regarding cheating and genAI, the reality is so much worse. Here we go: The value of the university degree, the main way we certify academic *and professional* competence, is being destroyed because genAI usage degrades skills and it‘s endemic. Students know this.
