A scene with a gaseous fart monster in the front and center of the page. It is the same style as the green gaseous text on the cover. It has long bubbly whiskers above its tubular purple mouth. Round, cartoonish yellow teeth that sparsely fit in its large bean-shaped mouth. The monster also has a large bulbous nose. It has long noodle-y arms and legs with large hands, feet, and cracked grotesque brown nails. The monster is lying on its back on a bed in a little girl's room reading her purple-color diary. It's laughing with its eyes close and its left hand clapped on its forehead. Gaseous bits can be seen emitting from its head and "tail" as well as more transparent gas that radiates throughout the room. The girl from the cover, now in form-fitting purple poka dotted pjs is just above center of the page. She's opened the door into her room and has a terrified expression as she sees this monster intruding in her space. One hand is still on the doorknob of the open door. Her hair spikes out like a ghibli film when a character is frigtened. The room is shades of pastel purples, pinks, blues and cream. There is a soccer ball on the floor and a poster of a silly narwhal that states "Make a splash!". At her vanity is an arched mirror with a ribboned sunhat on top of it. There are polaroids tucked into the mirror below the hat and a blue 1st place ribbon on the other side. The wall where the headboard sits against has long vertical stripes of blue and pink. The headboard is another shade of pink with a wavy top design. There are white FX lines that radiate along the whole of the page centering the girl and monster.

The same monster from the last image is now in an energetic pouncing position with eyes open and a large smile on its face. Its right eye has a purple swirl instead of a pupil, the left one has a dark purple dot as a pupil - the monster has yellow sclera. It holds the diary in its right hand. The monster is pouncing on the man from the cover. He is now in a green house coat with a white v neck shirt beneath and green shorts. He has 3 cartoonish leg hairs, white socks, and teal bubbly slippers. He looks shocked and terrified with his mouth wide open as he falls backwards from the monster.

A piece I made for the 50th anniversary edition of Magic The Gathering's Monster Manual. Thanks to AD, Fury Galluzzi - @furygalluzzi.bsky.social, for this very fun assignment!

Text: TANGENTS
In geometry, a tangent is when a line touches a curve at a single point.

The point where they touch is called the tangent. in a drawing, this is what I call a “bump-up” tangent (more on that
later), but the term “tangent” is a bit more flexible when applied to visual art.
When an artist (or art critic, or art teacher, etc) mentions a tangent, they’re generally referring to any relationship between lines (or elements) in a drawing that interact in a way that the artist didn’t intend.
When I was a teacher, I found it helpful to differentiate the various offenses that fell under the catch-all term “tangents” and give them each a name, to make identification of problem areas in a drawing easier.

An earlier version of these examples was published online in 2011 under the title “The Schweizer Guide to Spotting Tangents.”

Long-Line Tangent
The “long-line” tangent is when the line from one subject in the drawing leads into the line of another.

Try to avoid near-tangents, too! Even if a line doesn’t actually connect with another, “close” isn’t great, either.

Bump-Up Tangent
A bump-up tangent is when one element of a drawing bumps up against another.

When the bump-up is the result of different subjects touching, correct it by making one clearly overlap the other.

Either of these works just fine!
Sometimes using the principle of “what’s closer?” overlap won’t always be the best solution. you can do that (like the nose in the example) or you can just redraw the offending lines (like the lapel).

Beyond just the drawing itself, make sure to avoid bumping your image against the formal components of the comic: word balloons, sound effects, panel borders, etc. They’re in the image, therefore, regardless of what stage they’re introduced into the art, they’re PART OF THE COMPOSITION, and need to be treated as such.

There are many publishers who insist on live (editable) balloons and dialogue text to make easier foreign sales and online publishing; I vehemently disagree with this approach, because it makes flexible what should be the sole purview of a cartoonist: the intersection of lines in the art, and lines in the art, like it or not, iNCLUDE the lines that surround a word balloon.

For this reason, LETTERiNG SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE iNKS. Then your inks can accommodate the balloons. This was standard practice until the advent of digital lettering, and while there’s nothing wrong with digital lettering, its placement in the pipeline order generally results in a poorer overall comic than would be the case were it done between the roughs/pencils stage and the inks.

A few years ago I planted Blue Shift sweet peas. They normally look like the last photo, but I had 1 plant that produced beautifully-mottled flowers. Haven't seen anything else online like it. Just planted seeds collected from that special variety and hoping they produce more of the same 🤞
